JULY 31, 2011

BRUCE A.
BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as
I see it and the views as I want them.

July 31 is …
Parent’s Day

Mother’s Day and
Father’s Day aren’t good enough. We have to combine them for Parent’s Day. It
sounds like Congress formed a Committee to determine the best way to celebrate
parenthood; we ended up with three separate holidays. What a waste of time and
effort.

Tiger Woods is going
to play in the PGA tournament next week and in the PGA Championship, the final
major of the year, the following week. He needs to earn significant money to
become eligible for the FedEx Championship series at the end of the year. He
needs the exposure to keep his sponsors happy. He has lost most of them.

Perhaps the Big Oil
Five oil companies should run our entire economy instead of just the large
portion they do.  The sputtering economy, high
unemployment rate and punishing gas prices are taking a huge toll on average
Americans, but at least somebody is doing well: The Big Five oil companies this
week announced they had made a whopping $36 billion in profits in the second
quarter of 2011.

According to second-quarter earnings reports, ExxonMobil alone made $10.7
billion in the most recent three months. That’s a 41 percent increase over the
same period last year and a 161 percent increase over 2009. Shell nearly
doubled its profits year over year, taking in $8.7 billion in the second
quarter. Chevron’s profits were $7.7 billion, up 43 percent. BP earned $5.6
billion, a far cry from its $17.2 billion loss a year ago. Only Conoco Philips,
with $3.4 billion in earnings, posted smaller profits than a year ago, dropping
18 percent due to the jettisoning of some Russian assets.

A good chunk of these profits is coming right out the pockets of the
American public, thanks in part to astronomical gas prices and to $4 billion to
$8 billion a year in deficit-increasing tax subsidies that oil companies
continue to get, long after the incentives those subsidies were designed to
create ceased to make economic sense.

Rather than invest their profits in such things as product development, new
facilities, hot talent or research — things that could create jobs, improve
consumer offerings and accelerate alternative energy production — three of the
five big oil companies are spending large amounts of that money buying back
shares of their own stock.  Exxon spent
$5.5 billion — or more than half of its total profits — to buy back its own
stock in the second quarter; Chevron spent $1 billion, or 13 percent of its
profits; and Conoco spent $3.1 billion — or 91 percent of its profits. The
numbers were similar last quarter.

“What this means is these companies see their profits as a way of
managing their stock price, rather than investing money in the future of their
own companies and the future of the economy,” said William Lazonick, a
professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.

I know big business
gets blamed for much of our economic woes but they are playing by the rules
Washington makes for them. Additionally, these publically traded companies are
owned by Americans or can be, so these profits help Americans. There is no
hidden bid corporation purgatory this money goes into never to be seen again.

The biggest problem
with the oil companies announcing these profits now is timing and perception.
The PR people dropped the ball here. They should have delayed issuing these
reports or issued preliminary reports understating profits and issued final
reports in a few months. The government does this all the time as it did this
week. Our government overstated growth for the first quarter and corrected it
this week. This is a common practice in Washington.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think
about.

BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as
I see it and the views as I want them.

July 30 is …
National Cheesecake Day

Today I get and like.
It is hard to go wrong with a piece of cheesecake with strawberries or
chocolate over it.

Do we have a budget
deal yet? Is the sky falling? Did the sun come up this morning? Were the birds
chirping? Is China still open? Is Europe still operating? Is the Pope Catholic?
I was just wondering.

Does the Republican
Party understand the concept of negotiation? It keeps putting out a plan; the
plan gets crucified so they change it or draft a new plan. The Democrats never
come up with a plan. They just sit back, blame the Republicans and watch as the
Republicans negotiate against themselves. The Republican Party is stupid and
being made a laughing stock. President Obama is beatable on this issue and in
2012 but not by the morons running the Republican Party now and the Tea-Party
is just a turd in the punchbowl, nothing more, an annoying itch that we should
not scratch.

I really hope they
have an NFL season this year and no one shows up!

I am still praying
and hoping against hope that the Chicago White Sox make the baseball playoffs.
The Chicago Cubs are doing what they can to prevent it. The White Sox traded a
pitcher, Edwin Jackson to Toronto who then traded him to the Cubs arch rival
St. Louis. To get back at the White Sox, the Cubs traded a starting outfielder
to the Cleveland Indians, the team just ahead of the White Sox.

The Cubs wanted to
pimp the White Sox so bad, they are even paying the 4 million dollar salary for
the rest of this year owed to the guy they traded. The Cubs got rid of a guy,
are paying him and got two minor leaguers they are also paying, who will never
make the big league team other than as a late-season call-up or in an injury
pinch.

That is some home
town loyalty for you. That shows why the Cubs will never win. They are only
concerned with selling tickets; making money and making sure the South Siders
do not win.

I hope the Chicago
Cubs have another bad century and they are eleven years into it so far with no
success.

I hope the debt
crisis is not solved by the alleged drop dead date of August 2, 2011.

I hope Congress tries
not to pay our military people, social security recipients and Medicare
beneficiaries. Even the two parties running this country into the ground cannot
spread or dodge the blame for that.

I hope everybody
realizes this country has enough money on hand to pay all our bills for ninety
days if nothing happens by August 2, 2011; the Government will still have
revenue coming in.

I hope no one tells
Obama he has the authority to make an unlimited number of coins in any
denomination. Paper money is limited by law but not coinage. He could issue
several Billion dollar coins and use them to pay off China or any other large
debt holders. Of course it is just another way to borrow money but it prevents
the non-sensical threatened government shutdown.

I hope when the debt
crisis bill finally is drafted and voted on it contains a few provisions that
will become law quietly, like most large legislative bills have in them;
provision such as no foreign aid for Afghanistan, Pakistan and all the other
‘stans’ over there, no foreign aid for Egypt, Israel or Yemen, no public aid or
assistance for any illegal aliens, even in medical emergencies; no public money
for abortions, birth control and gender transfer; no public aid for anyone on
public aid who becomes pregnant, you lose it all; drug testing for all public
assistance recipients; term limits of 12 years for all members of Congress
total regardless of which House they serve in, years are combined to reach 12;
English is established as the National language and all government documents
and signs are printed in English only; a qualification to receive any
government assistance payments or aid is the requirement you speak English as
do your children; require that schools be taught in English only; cease
providing military protection to Japan and Europe; exit NATO; exit the United
Nations and sell it the UN property and buildings in this country and require
property taxes be paid as well as income taxes on income; eliminate the
tax-free charity concept, donations and charitable good will not diminish;
charities should pay income taxes and property taxes, even churches; eliminate
all Congressional committees, we elect Representatives and Senators, they are
our committee, we should not allow them to increase spending by hiring people
and forming committees to do the job we elected them to do, we could just elect
the committee, oh, that’s right we do, it is called Congress.

If the majority of
these reforms are implemented, we would increase revenue without raising income
taxes or fees on citizens and we would significantly reduce wasteful and
useless spending. The budget would have a surplus not a deficit. The surplus
should be used to pay off the National debt.

This stuff really is
not that difficult, we just complicate it.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think
about.

Cheese Sacrifice Purchase Day

I do not have a clue
what we are celebrating today or why.

No budget deal yet.
No Obama plan yet. Still clueless in Washington DC; Surprise, Surprise.

Politicians were once
seen as a necessary evil. Now, they are just evil.

You can run,
sometimes for quite a while, but you cannot hide.  Frederick Mark Barrett, a Florida murder convict who had
been running from the law for 32 years, was arrested near Montrose, Colorado,
Wednesday morning, according to a report from Fox31. The Grand Junction
Sentinel reports that Barrett escaped Florida’s Union Correction Institute in
1979. He was serving a life sentence for the murder of Carl Ardolino in 1971.

Authorities posing as U.S. Forest Service officials stormed Barrett’s
remote cabin where he had been living for 17 years under the name ‘Neil Richard
Meltzer.’ The Montrose Daily Press expects Barrett will be extradited to
Florida.

Barrett was detailed on America’s Most Wanted in 2010. At the time,
officials speculated he may have fled to Hawaii, California, Colorado or
Maryland. No word on whether the television exposure aided in his capture.

This guy was on the run longer than Forrest Gump.

From the HuffPost, less than two years after an Army officer killed 13
people in a shooting attack on Fort Hood, police have arrested an AWOL soldier
with weapons and explosives who reportedly confessed about his plans to attack
the base in Killeen, Tex.

Officers from the Killeen Police Department apprehended a man alleged to
have been in possession of firearms and bomb-making materials after authorities
received a tip about a suspicious individual, Fox News reports.

The suspect — identified in multiple media outlets as Pfc. Naser Abdo —
was assigned to a Kentucky base, but had reportedly gone absent without leave
around July 4 after officials accused him of possessing child pornography on
his government computer.

“Yesterday afternoon, at about 2 p.m., we arrested a Fort Campbell,
Kentucky, AWOL solider who was wanted for child pornography,” Killeen
Police Department spokeswoman Carol Smith told The Huffington Post. “He
was arrested at the America’s Best Value Inn, and that’s all I can confirm for
you right now. He is in our jail, but anything else I can’t comment on.” FBI
spokesman Erik Vasys claimed firearms and “items that could be identified
as bomb-making components, including gunpowder” were discovered in the
suspect’s motel room, according to NBC DFW.

Investigators recovered 18 pounds of sugar, a pressure cooker and six
pounds of smokeless gunpowder — enough raw materials to create two bombs, reported
Fox News. Abdo has admitted to authorities that he was planning an attack on
Fort Hood, according to an Army alert obtained by the Associated Press.

I may be just paranoid but it seems all of the soldiers looking to commit
mass murder in the military are Muslim or have Middle Eastern names. We should
just not let Muslims or Middle Easterns into the military for three years. That
should be enough time to get rid of the one already in the military and allow
us to get a better grip on the problem. We got to get a cue, people. The cure for political correctness appears to be worse than the disease.

In a democracy, the majority rules and I bet that rule would be supported
by over half of the voters in this country.

Tiger is back; he is rejoining the circus that is his life. Tiger Woods returns to golf next week at the Bridgestone
Invitational, ending an 11-week break to heal injuries to his left leg.

Woods announced the
decision on his website on Thursday. On his Twitter account, Woods says he’s
“feeling fit and ready to tee it up at Firestone next week. Excited to get
back out there!”

It marks the
third-longest layoff of his career, only this time Woods returns with as much
uncertainty about his future as ever. Along with questions about the strength
of his left knee and Achilles’, he embarks on this latest comeback with a new
caddie. Woods has plunged to No. 21 in the world — his lowest ranking since
Jan. 26, 1997.

No word on who the caddie will be but he has a niece that is the top ranked
female collegiate golfer in America. That would be a nice summer job for her
and a nice way to earn a few bucks for college expenses.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too.

JULY 28, 2011

BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as I see it and the views as I want them.

July 28 is … National Milk Chocolate Day

This day is not fair to us weight challenged individuals. It seems we have a bunch of days for candy, cookies and great flavors but that is OK by me.

We are still arguing over the debt ceiling and government spending. A good portion of the national debt and our current over spending is a result of exporting our idea of democracy, freedom and warfare. We are currently engaged three acknowledged wars; Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya. We are involved in numerous less publicized wars and actions including Korea, Somalia, Yemen, Sudan and certain states that were formerly part of the Soviet Union. We provide defense to Japan, Germany, Israel and numerous other states that do not spend on their defense since we will.

The United States has been buying friends and international respect for decades. Many of the countries we protect and support have decided we are the bad guy now. We continue to spend our money on them. Most of the nations around have lost their respect for this country but they still cash our checks and we are stupid enough to keep sending them out.

During this self-made, mostly exaggerated, over-hyped political game we are in concerning the debt ceiling and spending, much has been made about how our economic problems will impact international economics and markets. So what. We are now too big to fail just like certain banks were in the Wall Street collapse and the auto industry collapse. In both of those cases the government provided massive bailouts. That money spent impulsively, foolishly and without quality benefits is now helping to cause this crisis, when added to the wasted defense spending.

Those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Every mistake should be used as a learning tool. When you get lemons, don’t just have a sour face, make lemonade. The appropriate expressions are endless but we do not seem to be learning a damn thing.

If we try to spend our way out of this mess, we will be revisiting it in a year or two. Obama wants to raise taxes. Taxes rarely go down or away. If we raise taxes now and survive this non-catastrophe, the taxes will still be raised meaning the government will have more money to spend on unappreciative foreign nations and entitlement programs here. The cuts will never take place or will be restored in short order.

Congress can only pass a budget that obligates the government for one  year. This Congress does not have the legal capacity to establish the budget for the next Congress or the Congress in 2014. Therefore, whatever is done today is all for show and publicity, “See what I did.” reelection Babble Congressman can use to tout their ability to govern.

We have lived through this type of childish behavior from our Congress and President in the past. These guys are not inventing anything but they are getting close to improve the absurdity of political behavior.

Boehner’s most recent plan, after detailed scrutiny shows it will only reduce spending by one billion dollars in 2012. The budget crisis is dealing with trillions of dollars and Boehner is going to cut one billion. That is just buying four fewer toilet seats for the space shuttle or a few less hammers for the Air Force. Once this scrutiny appeared in the press, Boehner called off the vote on his plan to redo the numbers. Rephrasing the lies does not make it a better or a workable deal, it just rephrases it.

Boehner, at least, has a plan. The Democrats do not have a detailed plan they will release. President Obama is just sitting quietly in the White House refusing to produce a plan. Once a deal is reached, he will come charging out of the Rose Garden on a white horse claiming to be our savior. He will come out for a plan he never read but was told about, similar to Obamacare.

We need to pass a law that says every Congressman and President that votes for or signs a budget that increases over the cost of living is ineligible for reelection. I believe Warren Buffet has espoused a similar sentiment.

Just one of the problems, according to our Secretary of the Treasury, 80 million people get government payments every month; that is 25% of the population.

Baseline budget spending is one of the largest scams in Washington. This concept calls for every budget item to increase a certain per centage every year. When Congress repeals the planned increase they brag about cutting spending. They are not cutting spending; they are merely not allowing an increase to take effect. What was spent last year will be spent next year. Where is the cut in that?

It is time to clean house in Washington. Even if the elected official is your spouse, parent, sibling or friend, they need to be voted out of office. Everyone talks about voting the rascals out but not their guy, he’s good. Everyone around the nations thinks this way and most get reelected. That has got to end.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too.

JULY 27, 2011

BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as I see it and the views as I want them.

July 27 it is… Take Your Pants For A Walk Day

Stay in your pants to do this. Congressman Wu might still have a job if he had left his pants on.

At least one Congressman has learned something from Weinergate. If you are caught with your pants down, do not bother trying to cover-up. It just will not work. Democratic Rep. David Wu of Oregon announced Tuesday that he will resign amid political fallout from an 18-year-old woman’s allegations she had an unwanted sexual encounter with him.

Within days of the allegation, Democratic leaders requested a House Ethics Committee investigation of his conduct. Wu had said Monday he would not seek re-election, but had come under increasing pressure to step down. “The wellbeing of my children must come before anything else,” Wu said in a statement. “With great sadness, I therefore intend to resign effective upon the resolution of the debt-ceiling crisis. This is the right decision for my family, the institution of the House, and my colleagues.”

Wu is the second House Democrat in the last six weeks to be forced to resign as a result of a sex scandal. Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York resigned after sending lewd photos of himself through Twitter.

It is hard to make Wu in Congress any more. It’s about time.

On this day in 1909, Orville Wright (one of the famous Wright Brothers, along with Wilbur) set a record for the longest airplane flight. Not that there were many records available … after all, it was the Wright Brothers who worked so hard at making plane flight practical in the first place!

Orville was testing the Army’s first airplane and kept it aloft for 1 hour, 12 minutes and 40 seconds over Fort Myer, Virginia. He was so tired from the experience that the plane crash-landed. He and his passenger (name unknown) were OK. I wonder if he wore p[ants for this flight?

On this date in 1953 the armistice agreement that ended the Korean War was signed at Panmunjon, Korea. The war lasted three years and 32 days. The truce negotiations between North Korean and U.S. delegates (representing South Korea) lasted two years and seventeen days.

Also on this date in 1990,  Zsa Zsa Gabor begins a 3 day jail sentence for slapping a cop. She is still alive but apparently in poor health.

Serial killers are always among us. They have been around for hundreds of years or longer but were just given a name in the late 1970s. A serial killers suffer from Antisocial Personality Disorder and appear normal or charming, sometimes referred to as the “mask of sanity.” Sometimes there is a sexual element to the murders and they may have a commonality such as gender, occupation, appearances, race, etc.

The term serial killer was coined in the 1970s due to cases such as Ted Bundy and David Berkowitz. According to an FBI Behavioral Unit study 85% of the world’s serial killers are in America. At any given time 20 to 50 unidentified active serial killers are at work continually changing their targets and methods. Prostitutes, runaways, and others who lead transient and anonymous lives are usually not reported missing promptly and receive little police or media attention, making them excellent targets. Experts speculate on what happens to unsolved cases of murderers. Some may commit suicide, die, be incarcerated, in mental institutions, relocate, or stopped killing; a few turn themselves in.

Experts don’t agree on an exact definition of a serial killer but general definitions are based on numbers and patterns: two or more unrelated victims in distinctly separate incidents. The Northwest has a notorious history of prototype killers — among them are Ted Bundy and the Green River Killer. Lesser known serial killers have claimed scores of lives but are only charged and/or convicted of one or two murders, but suspected of more.

A couple of years ago the BTK killer from Wichita, Kansas resurfaced after nearly 30 years since his first suspected killing. Dennis Rader was active from 1974 to 1994. In 2004 he began writing letters about his crimes. He had written letters while he was active, teasing the authorities and daring them to catch him. After his desire to reenter the spotlight resulted in the letters in 2004, he got his wish and was captured.

Are you tired of political correctness? Do you find it difficult to say what you believe because someone is always looking to pick a fight? I am tired of it. I did not bomb anything on 9/11. I never enslaved anyone. I do not owe anyone a free ride regardless of their upbringing, social status, color, race or lot in life. I see no reason to apologize for being an American, for being from the greatest nation the world has ever known no matter what Pres. Obama does. I am not happy with our President but I am proud of him. I do not agree with everything our country does overseas and around the world but I will defend these actions to my death.

Remember political correctness.  “Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical and radical minority, rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too.

Good luck to my son, Ross. He is sitting for the bar exam in Indiana today and tomorrow. He will do just fine, I am sure.

Speaking of the out of control Congress, another member of Congress is showing how proud he is of his penis. This piece of work decided to show off to a teenager 38 years younger than he is. Congressman David Wu is facing calls for his resignation over a young woman’s reported accusation that she had an “unwanted sexual encounter” with the Democrat three weeks after his election victory in November.

The seven-term Democrat had a telephone conversation on Saturday with House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi about the allegation, said Wu spokesman Erik Dorey. He would not comment on the substance of their talk. An aide to Pelosi declined Saturday to comment on Wu, who earlier this year apologized for bizarre behavior during his most recent re-election campaign. Gee, I wonder what they discussed? Probably was not the debt crisis.

The allegation – which was first reported by The Oregonian newspaper – seemed to be boiling into yet another sex scandal confronting a member of Congress. It comes a month after Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., stepped down after getting caught sending suggestive pictures of himself on his Twitter account. Late Friday, the 56-year-old Wu issued a one-sentence statement about The Oregonian’s report: “This is very serious, and I have absolutely no desire to bring unwanted publicity, attention or stress to a young woman and her family.” Pressure was building on Wu to publicly address the allegation. There were also calls for his resignation. Show pride in yourself and not just in your red-headed brother, resign or commit suicide.

“I’m saddened to hear this news. David owes the citizens he represents a detailed explanation,” said State Rep. Brad Witt, who is running against Wu in the Democratic primary next spring. “If this accusation proves to be true, it’s time for David Wu to resign and get the help he needs.” Another challenger of Wu in the Democratic primary, state Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian, said Saturday Wu should resign immediately. “I think any 56-year-old man, especially a 56-year-old Congressman, that asserts himself like this on an 18-year-old girl, has got no business serving in Congress,” Avakian said at a news conference. “There is nothing that can be explained that makes this situation right. He’s got to resign.”

The authorities in Norway are having a problem counting the dead from last week’s tragic attack by the lone local man. I heard the reports say 94 were dead, then 77 were dead, then 68 were dead and then 73 were dead. Apparently the island location for the more brutal portion of the attack is isolated and the terrain is hard to search. The final death toll will only govern our shock, misery and disgust for the barbaric human that did the killing. He will face 21 years in prison regardless of the death toll he caused.

President Obama gave a speech Monday night from his bully pulpit. Boehner gave a speech from his office. Both blamed the other or their respective parties for the deadlock in Congress.  Both or wrong and acting like chjildren. If either does not get what they want they are going to tuirn this country around and go home. Where’s a Norwegian gunman when you need one?

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too.

BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as

July 25 is …
Threading The Needle Day

Stay away from
haystacks while celebrating today.

In Norway, the
maximum punishment for any crime is 21 years in prison. It does not matter what
the crime is, the number of victims or the number of separate crimes committed
in one act, the maximum punishment is 21 years in prison. That means that the Anders Behring Breivik,
the 32 year-old Norwegian man that bombed a government building and then drove
ninety miles to kill over 80 teenagers will be released from prison when he is
53, assuming he is convicted of the crime. That just does not seem right or
just. With that thinking, you might as well kill as many people as you dislike
at once since after the first murder, the rest are free.

I will bet it takes
Washington DC less than five years to create a slum out of Walter Reed
Hospital. Walter
Reed Army Medical Center, the Army’s flagship hospital where privates to
presidents have gone for care, is closing its doors after more than a century.

Hundreds of thousands of the nation’s war wounded from World War I to today
have received treatment at Walter Reed, including 18,000 troops who served in
Iraq and Afghanistan.

President Dwight Eisenhower died there. So did Gens. John J. Pershing and
Douglas MacArthur.

It’s where countless celebrities, from Bob Hope to quarterback Tom Brady,
have stopped to show their respect to the wounded. Through the use of medical
diplomacy, the center also has tended to foreign leaders.

The storied hospital, which opened in 1909, was scarred by a 2007 scandal
about substandard living conditions on its grounds for wounded troops in
outpatient care and the red tape they faced. It led to improved care for the
wounded, at Walter Reed and throughout the military. By then, however, plans
were moving forward to close Walter Reed’s campus.

Two years earlier, a government commission, noting that Walter Reed was
showing its age, voted to close the facility and consolidate its operations
with the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and a hospital at Fort
Belvoir, Va., to save money. Former and current patients and staff members will
say goodbye at a ceremony Wednesday on the parade grounds in front of the main
concrete and glass hospital complex. Most of the moving will occur in August.
On Sept. 15, the Army hands over the campus to the new tenants: the State
Department and the District of Columbia. The buildings on campus deemed
national historic landmarks will be preserved; others probably will be torn
down. The city is expected to develop its section for retail and other uses.

A Target or Walmart  no doubt. I also
bet it will be a haven for the homeless, the lazy, drug addicts, drug dealers
and prostitutes. You know the type of place where the Mayor of Washington DC
hangs out.

“For many of the staff members, even though they know that this is the
future of the military health system, in a way, it’s still like losing your
favorite uncle, and so there is a certain amount of mourning that is going on
and it is an emotional time,” said Col. Norvell Coots, commander of the
Walter Reed Health Care System. The new facility will be called the Walter Reed
National Military Medical Center. It will consolidate many of Walter Reed’s
current offerings with the Navy hospital

On the lighter side
of reality, Crooner Dean Martin and comedian Jerry Lewis staged their first
show as a team this day in 1946 at Club 500 in Atlantic City, NJ. Actually, the
two had met while performing — separately — at the Glass Hat in New York City
and decided to try an ad-lib act together. The rest is entertainment history.

The duo went from
earning $350 a week to $5,000 a week in under eight months, with Martin playing
the romantic straight man opposite Lewis as his goofy, unpredictable partner. Ten
years later, the curtain came down on their final team performance at the
Copacabana in New York. Over that decade, the zany two made seventeen movies
including My Friend Irma, That’s My Boy, The Caddy, Pardners,
Jumping Jacks and The Stooge.

Dean Martin went on
to become a recording star (Memories are Made of This, Return to Me,
Everybody Loves Somebody), movie star (The Young Lions, Rio
Bravo
, Sons of Katie Elder, the Matt Helm series) and host of
his own TV variety show, The Dean Martin Show. Lewis pursued a solo
career in Hollywood as comic lead (The Sad Sack, Cinderfella, The
Nutty Professor
); director (The Bellboy, The Errand Boy, The
Patsy
, Family Jewels, Which Way to the Front); producer;
teacher (USC); and consummate entertainer. It would take 20 years for the two
to speak publicly with each other again.

Martin died December
25, 1995. Lewis continues to set records in fund-raising during his annual Stars
Across America! Labor Day Telethon
for the Muscular Dystrophy Association
(he has been chairman of the MDA since 1950). Lewis announced earlier in 2011
he was retiring from the telethon although he would still be involved. The Las
Vegas resident continues to make nightclub appearances and returned to the
stage in the Broadway revival production of Damn Yankees in 1996.
Critics called his performance as the Devil, a rip-roaring success.

I know Jerry Lewis is
not popular with younger folks and is not understood by everyone but for once
the French got it right. Lewis is a comic genius and the world is a better
place with him in it. That cannot be said about all of us.

Just a few points to ponder.

Amelia Earhart Day

It took me a lot of
work just to locate this day.

The Experimental
Aircraft Association opens in Osh Kosh, WI on July 25, 2011. The EEA convention
is a great time and a huge air show. The Boeing Dreamliner is making its air
show debut there, just several years late. If you get a chance, go to this
convention at least once in your life. It is held every year around the same
time at the same place. Enjoy and have fun.

From HuffPost, after more than two days
of deliberation, jurors convicted Ohio serial killer Anthony Sowell of
aggravated murder in the deaths of 11 women whose decomposed remains were found
at his Cleveland home. He was found guilty on scores of additional charges
related to the deaths, including kidnapping.

Families of the victims hugged and wept as Judge Dick Ambrose read the
verdict just before 3 p.m. on Friday. Sowell, wearing a gray polo shirt in
court, could face the death penalty. Sowell, 51, had pleaded not guilty to more
than 80 offenses related to the deaths of the women, who began disappearing in
2007. The bodies were discovered in Sowell’s Cleveland home in 2009. He’d
previously served 15 years in prison for a 1989 rape conviction.

Many of the victims had been missing for significant periods of time; most
had criminal records and suffered from drug addiction. Nine of the victims had
traces of cocaine or depressants in their systems. Prosecutors say Sowell lured
the victims to his home with the promise of alcohol or drugs. The bodies of
five women were found in shallow graves in Sowell’s back yard. Four more bodies
were discovered on the third floor of his home, and the remains of two more
women were discovered in the basement. Several were so badly decomposed had to
be identified using dental records.  Another
five women reported that Sowell attacked and sexually assaulted them in his
home.

In his closing arguments, Sowell’s
attorney John Parker argued that none of the defendant’s DNA had been linked to
his client. He said that Sowell, an honorably discharged U.S. Marine,
“deserved better.” He also accused police of mishandling the crime
scene.

But Richard Bombik, Cuyahoga County Assistant Prosecutor, said there was a
distinct pattern in Sowell’s violent behavior and evidence
“overwhelmingly” linked the deaths to him.

“This is not complicated, ladies and gentlemen,” he told jurors
in his closing statements. “Do not make it complicated.”

This is the type of
case lawyers are criticized for. People are always saying “How can you
represent this man?” or something like that. Everyone has a Constitutional
Right to representation. A lawyer must zealously represent his client within
the bounds of the law. I often would forego a trial and go straight to the
death penalty but only in cases where the accused is claiming innocence; then
he gets his day in Court.

The United States
does not have a monopoly on mass murderers. The 32-year-old Norwegian man who
allegedly went on a shooting spree on the island of Utoya has been identified
as Anders Behring Breivik, according to multiple reports.

The Daily Mail and Sky News were among those to report the suspect’s name. According
to witnesses, the gunman was dressed as a police officer and gunned down young
people as they ran for their lives at a youth camp. Police said Friday evening
that they’ve linked the youth camp shooting and Oslo bombing. Breivik is believed
to have acted alone.

Norwegian TV2 reports that Breivik belongs to “right-wing
circles” in Oslo. Swedish news site Expressen
adds that he has been known to write to right-wing forums in Norway, is a
self-described nationalist and has also written a number of posts critical of
Islam. A Twitter account for Breivik has surfaced, though it only has one post,
this quote from philosopher John Stuart Mill: “One person with a belief is
equal to the force of 100 000 who have only interests.” The tweet was
posted on July 17.

On a Facebook account that Norwegian media outlets have attributed to
Breivik, he describes himself as having Christian, conservative views. He says
he enjoys hunting, the games World of Warcraft and Modern Warfare 2, and lives
in Oslo. He also lists political analysis and stock analysis as interests.

President Obama was quick to react to this story and used the term
‘terrorist’. Not every mass murderer is a terrorist. The term ‘terrorist’ is
losing its significance because we use it too much. It is becoming an accepted
part of our world and we could stop that if we wanted to. It would upset a few
people but only the living.

July 23 is …
National Vanilla Ice Cream Day

Today was probably
created for our beloved Governor Milquetoast, you know, the guy in Israel on
our dime with his live-in girlfriend. At least it is a girl.

Who is screwing whom
around this country and the world?

1. Congress is
screwing the citizens that vote and are productive;

2. President Obama is
screwing white people and others that work and pay their taxes under the tax
laws;

3. The governor of
Illinois, Governor Milquetoast is screwing the people of Illinois; he is going
to veto the gambling legislation passed in Springfield by the people elected to
their job. Milquetoast was appointed after the last biggest screwer ‘Blago’ was
indicted; Milquetoast was then elected after the Republicans ran a moron
against him because they misread the fact the Tea Party does not play well in
Peoria;

4. The liberal,
Democrat leaning press is pushing the Obama agenda down Americas throat and
Obama is paying them back with interviews, White House access and bailout
money;

5. The medical
industry is screwing everyone that pays for them own health care or has private
insurance; I am undergoing a series of skin graphs, each one costs $5,465.00
and I have had 5 and will get an additional 5; each procedure takes less than
fifteen minutes of time for the doctor but his fee out of the $5,465.00 is
$1,400.00; the skin graph costs $4,000.00 out of the total. I asked the doctor
what Medicare pays for these procedures, he told me they pay $1,400.00 and will
cover 8 of the procedures. Someone in Washington, a bean-counter not a doctor
predecided that in a Medicare situation 8 procedures will correct the problem
without ever discussing this with the doctor involved or reviewing the
particular case; it was also decided the price that will be paid is $1,400.00.
Why are I and millions like me and our private insurance providers getting
screwed for $5,465.00 for the procedure if the same procedure works and is
supposedly identical for $1,400.00 when Medicare pays for it? This is just one
example and this will worsen and become more prevalent under Obamacare.
Remember the death panel scare? They do exist and will grow exponentially with
government mandated health care. Kiss Grandma and Grandpa good bye.

6. The NFL is
screwing the fans. The rich owners finally decided to give the rich players
more money making them richer. The owners ratified the proposed deal on
Thursday, unanimously. The NFL players refused to even vote on the proposed
deal. The NFL players union, for the second time, decertified itself earlier
this spring. Therefore there is no union. Once the contract is finally
approved, the union will recertify itself. What are the players paying the
union dues for. The un ion decertifies so they technically do not represent the
players, current and former. When the current players get their deal and it
screws the former players, the union can throw up their hands saying, “Hey, it
wasn’t us.” More screwing by the NFL than a Johnny Holmes film.

7. The Republican
Party is screwing every Republican, every conservative and many independents
that do not want to reelect Obama. The Republican Party is once again recycling
older candidates who have already lost at least once. The Party does this when
it does not believe a sitting President can be defeated. The morons, liars,
criminals, cheats and millionaires they have running now do not want to solve any
problems. They do not know how to solve any problems. They just want to tell us
what is wrong, who is to blame and how good it used to be.

8. The Atlanta school
system screwed the children and parents of Atlanta and many others. Part of the
fall-out is massive firings and layoffs. All of these people will get
unemployment, food stamps and a host of other welfare type benefits that will
cost all taxpayers money. In addition, several suits are being threatened by
people who did nt get free tutors, school breakfasts nd lunches and other
education benefits tied to the progress being shown by the school system. Since
the School system was cheating and lying, many benefits did not get awarded.
Parents want those benefits. The children were screwed the most since they were
not getting a quality education while being taught by criminals.

These are just a few
examples off the top of my head. None of us are even being kissed, just
screwed.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too.

The ratcatcher should let them starve to death!

In Crime and Punishment!, current events on July 22, 2011 at 6:12 AM

JULY 22, 2011

BRUCE A. BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as I see it and the views as I want them.

July 22 is … Ratcatcher’s Day

It might take a rat to catch a rat but we still have to catch them.

If I understand the news about California’s finances, the State is broke. The prison system is being punished by the federal Courts for overcrowding. The entire nation is going broke. Law-abiding citizens are being thrown out of their homes by foreclosure. The number of homeless is increasing. But wait, the criminals in the California prison system have demands that require more tax dollars to make their life more comfortable.

From the news blotter on Wednesday, inmates in a third of California’s prisons are conducting a hunger strike in protest of solitary confinement policy. Recent reports show that many inmates, who are in their third week of the strike, have shown dramatic weight loss and are collapsing from starvation, reports the Los Angeles Times

.

The protesting inmates, who are most active at Pelican Bay State Prison, Corcoran State Prison and the California Correctional Institute at Tehachapi, have been refusing meals since July 1, according to KPCC radio. Many of the protesters are in solitary confinement, otherwise known as security housing units (SHU).

They have five core demands (via Prisons.org):

1. “Eliminate group punishments” and instead enforce individual accountability.

2. Abolish debriefing policies, which dictate that inmates in SHU can only be released into the regular prison population if they provide information on gang activity.

3. Make prisons comply with the recommendations of the US Commission on Safety and Abuse in Prisons (2006) to end longterm solitary confinement.

4. “Provide adequate food” and sanitary conditions in solitary confinement

5. Have the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation expand and provide education programs and other privileges for SHU inmates.

Man, it is tough being a drain on society in California.

Usually the rats jump off the sinking ship. If you work for Tiger Woods, you get thrown overboard. So much for loyalty. Tiger Woods fired caddie Steve Williams on Wednesday, ending a 12-year relationship in which he won 72 times worldwide and 13 majors.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Stevie for all his help, but I think it’s time for a change,” Woods said on his website. “Stevie is an outstanding caddie and a friend and has been instrumental in many of my accomplishments. I wish him great success in the future.”

Woods did not say who would replace Williams or when he would return to golf. This report is from Associated Press.

Maybe we should transfer all of the California prison population to Texas. They know how to deal with them. A Texas inmate was executed Wednesday for killing a Dallas-area convenience store clerk during a shooting spree that he said was in retaliation for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Mark Stroman, 41, was lethally injected shortly after his final court appeal was rejected. He was pronounced dead at 8:53 p.m. at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Huntsville Unit. Stroman claimed the shooting spree that killed two men and injured a third targeted people of Middle Eastern descent, though all three victims were from South Asia. It was the death of 49-year-old Vasudev Patel that put Stroman on death row. The lone survivor, Rais (Raze) Bhuiyan (Boo-yon), unsuccessfully sued to stop the execution, saying his Muslim beliefs told him to forgive Stroman. The courts denied his requests.

From the death chamber, Stroman asked for God’s grace and said hate in the world had to stop. “Even though I lay on this gurney, seconds away from my death, I am at total peace,” he said. He later called himself “still a proud American, Texas loud, Texas proud.” “God bless America. God bless everyone,” he added, then turned to the warden and said: “Let’s do this damn thing.” Texas did its part.

The execution was briefly delayed as the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals considered a final appeal. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected appeals earlier Wednesday. In an unusual step, Bhuiyan had asked the courts to halt Stroman’s execution. The native of Bangladesh and a former convenience store worker lost the sight in one of his eyes when Stroman shot him in the face. He also said he wanted to spend time with the convict to learn more about why the shootings occurred. “Killing him is not the solution,” Bhuiyan said. “He’s learning from his mistake. If he’s given a chance, he’s able to reach out to others and spread that message to others.”

A federal district judge in Austin rejected the suit and Bhuiyan’s request for an injunction on Wednesday afternoon. His lawyers appealed the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court, where Justice Antonin Scalia turned it down. Stroman’s lawyer, in a separate appeal to the Supreme Court, pointed to Bhuiyan’s “significant surprise” and argued that attorneys during Stroman’s trial and in earlier stages of his appeals were deficient for not illustrating “the path that led him to this violent frenzy.” Stroman’s execution was the eighth this year in Texas. At least eight other inmates in the nation’s busiest death penalty state have execution dates in the coming weeks.

Stroman was free on bond for a gun possession arrest when his shooting spree started. He had previous convictions for burglary, robbery, theft and credit card abuse, served at least two prison terms and was paroled twice. His juvenile record showed an armed robbery at age 12. When police arrested him the day Patel was killed, they found the .44-caliber handgun used in the shooting. Stroman confessed, and court documents show he told authorities he belonged to the Aryan Brotherhood, a white supremacist prison gang. Prosecutors also say he told another jail inmate about the shootings and how automatic weapons police found in his car were intended for a planned attack at a Dallas-area shopping mall. Stroman more recently denied the white supremacist description. He also had avoided trouble in prison in recent years, said Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons.

Stroman blamed the shootings on the loss of a sister in the collapse of one of the World Trade Center towers – although prosecutors said in court documents there’s no firm evidence she ever existed. “I wanted those Arabs to feel the same sense of vulnerability and uncertainty on American soil much like the mindset of chaos and bedlam that they were already accustomed to in their home country,” he said on a website devoted to his case.

He described his victims as “perched behind the counter here in the Land of Milk and Honey … this foreigner who’s own people had now sought to bring the exact same chaos and bewilderment upon our people and society as they lived in themselves at home and abroad.” But he added he had made a “terrible mistake out of love, grief and anger” and had destroyed his victims’ families “out of pure anger and stupidity.””I’m not the monster the media portrays me,” he said last week from death row. He did not get to prove his point.

Besides Patel’s slaying, Stroman was charged but not tried in the shooting death of Waqar Hasan, 46, a Pakistani immigrant who moved to Dallas in 2001 to open a convenience store. Hasan was killed four days after the terrorists struck. The attack on Bhuiyan came a week later. This guy did what many wanted to do nut knew they couldn’t. He rightfully paid for it with his life.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too.
