BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as
I see it and the views as I want them.

August 31 is
… National Trail Mix Day

Sometimes ideas seem
a whole lot better in the thinking stage than they do in the implementation
stage. The idea in this story just could never have seemed like a good idea but
the government employee responsible for it did not lose his job, even though
people lost their lives. He did get transferred but no indication he took a pay
cut. Kenneth
Melson is out as head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives, the Department of Justice announced Tuesday.

Melson has been under fire from Republicans over the scandal surrounding
the gun trafficking program Operation Fast and Furious. The Justice Department
announced that Melson will be moving back to the Department of Justice to serve
in the Office of Legal Programs.

Melson has been under pressure to step aside since earlier this summer, after
a House Oversight Committee hearing revealed controversial aspects of the
program. ATF agents charged with monitoring the illegal sale and transfer of
guns from the U.S. To Mexican drug cartels told lawmakers that, instead of
arresting small-time buyers, they were ordered to stand by and let the guns go
through, in the hopes of tracing them to larger arms dealers. After border
patrol agent Brian Terry was murdered in a shootout along the Arizona-Mexico
border in December 2010, two weapons found on the scene were linked that the
Fast and Furious program.

This month, the Justice Department announced that guns from the program had
turned up at the scenes of at least 11 crimes in the U.S. In El Paso, Texas, 42
weapons were seized from two crime scenes alone. Melson “was part of the bad
judgment. … This was a program so stupid from the start,” Rep. Darrell Issa
(R-Calif.), the head of the Oversight Committee, told Fox News in June.

In July, after a review of the program, Melson admitted that, in at least one
instance, agents could and should have intercepted the weapons. “I read
through those and found ROIs (reports of investigation) that indeed suggested
that interdiction could have occurred, and probably should have occurred, but
did not occur,” Melson told congressional lawmakers.

In a recent
interview, Marla Maples, I did not realize she was still alive, had some
advice, non-advice for Maria Shriver. Maples, who currently has a new CD out,
“Visions of Eternity,” and Donald Trump went through an ugly divorce
in 1999, making front-page news almost every week. And although she calls that
a “lifetime ago,” she does have some advice for Maria Shriver and
Arnold Schwarzenegger as they go through their very public split.

“Maria is such a brilliant woman – I adore her and the kids – I just know
that she’s got it. She’s got a great path and wonderful people around her that
she doesn’t need my advice. But truly, it’s about finding something that is
deep inside of you; it’s not about money.” Maples said. “It was very emotional
and deep and it broke my heart on many levels. But, at the same time, it gave
me a beautiful life today! Because you can either get knocked down and stay
down or you can get up and show that you are strong. I think happiness is such
a deeply-rooted soul choice.”

Now do not forget, IT IS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY! Let me repeat what Marla
(of course I have talent outside of bed) Maples says; IT IS NOT ABOUT THE
MONEY. Marla Maples is not giving any of her extortion money back but it has
nothing to do with who she really is. The Wizard of Oz could give a brain to
the scarecrow but not even he could help MM.

99 arrests on the books, 99 arrests … The entire judicial system should
be embarrassed about this farce. More than one Judge should lose his gig. A Chicago man who has been
arrested 99 times was sentenced to 18 months in prison Monday after allegedly
going door-to-door with his 3-year-old daughter in suburban Riverside
“looking for new victims to con.”

18 months in prison amounts to ninety days. This
criminal will get half off for good behavior. The definition of good behavior
in prison is very broad. That leaves the 18 months at 9 months. He will get six
months off because he was not convicted of a violent crime. Once again, the
definition of violent crime is quite broad. That reduces the 9 months to 3
months, meaning he will do ninety days and likely less since he will get credit
for time served. The day he was arrested will give him one day credit. I do not
know if he has been in jail since his arrest. If he has been, he was likely
released from jail with time served. Do you feel safer?

Albert Luis Alvarez, 37, was arrested on August
10 after Riverside residents called police about a “suspicious” man
asking for money while pushing a stroller, the Chicago Tribune reports.
When police found Alvarez, he allegedly threw several bags of drugs on the
ground before police found more heroin in his pockets. He was allegedly telling
residents that he was injured and needed money for his young daughter, who was
ultimately turned over to a family member, Fox Chicago reports.  When police took him to the station, they
realized he had 98 prior arrests and 23 convictions, CBS Chicago reports. He
has been convicted of burglary, robbery, larceny, assault, drugs and smuggling.
He also gave various police departments 10 dates of birth, nine names and five
Social Security numbers used as aliases.

Alvarez pleaded guilty Monday to obstruction of
justice for destroying drugs while police tried questioning him. He also faced
possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and child endangerment
charges, according to Fox Chicago.

“Alvarez has consistently and repeatedly
disobeyed orders of the court and blatantly disregarded the law by
intentionally engaging in criminal behavior,” Riverside Police Chief Tom
Weitzel told reporters after Alvarez’s arrest. “His involvement in the
Riverside case … is of great concern … due to the fact he’s proven to be
prone to violence and will stop at almost nothing to evade police.”

Am I the only one who thinks the names of people
arrested for crimes or doing uncivilized things in this country generally have
non-American, minority and foreign sounding names? I bet that is not the case
in other countries. Who ever told parent(s) they could just make stupid names
up or make-up their own spelling? It just is not right and it establishes that
you do not want to be absorbed into American life.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think
about.

August 30 is
… National Toasted Marshmallow Day

Toasted marshmallows have nothing to do with
this story from last week out of London. Neither do sunny-side up fried eggs. A 26-year-old woman is
recovering from a ruptured breast implant after taking a shot to the chest
during a Saturday round of paintballing.

The woman, who has not been named, thought she was experiencing heavy
bruising, but when she paid a visit to her doctor on Monday, it was discovered
that her silicone breast had, in fact, exploded.

UK Paintball, which operated the facility in the South London town of
Croydon where the incident took place, is now taking extra safety precautions,
according to The Sun. The lawsuit has not been filed yet and copycats
have yet to come forward but they will.

A statement posted to the UK Paintball website reads:

“Due to an incident at our Croydon Paintballing centre on Saturday 20
August 2011 we respectfully ask that any ladies with surgical breast implants
notify our team at the time of booking. You will be given special information
on the dangers of paintballing with enhanced boobs and asked to sign a
disclaimer. You will also be issued with extra padding to protect your implants
while paintballing.” Elton John could write a song about enhanced electric
boobs to make the story more enjoyable.

Paintballs travel approximately 190 miles-per-hour. “Part of the fun of
paintball is that it hurts a bit when you get shot but in all the years we’ve
been going we’ve never seen an incident like this,” a spokesperson for UK
Paintball said, according to the Croydon Guardian.  “It came as a real surprise to hear that a
woman had her implant burst at one of our centres and whilst she’s going to
make a full recovery, we want to ensure nothing like this happens ever again.

The incident is thought to be the first of its kind in the United Kingdom,
the BBC reported. The spokesperson also added, “It’s worth remembering that
having bigger breasts will make you an easier target for your enemies.” And
also for your friends and many drunk people.

Rick Perry thinks Social Security is a government Ponzi scheme. Not a new
idea but a thought not many national political candidates express. He also
insists that Social Security is a “monstrous lie” Once again, this is not a new
thought but rarely expressed publically by serious national candidates. If Rick
Perry wants to continue to be a player he has to learn what to say to whom and
when. Do not tell me what the problems are and who caused them. Tell me how you
will fix the problems.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think
about.

BRUCE A.
BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as
I see it and the views as I want them.

August 29 is
… More Herbs, Less Salt Day

From Sunday morning,
Irene was a big storm but not as big as predicted. It was the first hurricane to
make landfall in the continental United States since 2008, and came almost six
years to the day after Katrina ravaged New Orleans. Experts guessed that no
other hurricane in American history had threatened as many people.

At least 2.3 million were under orders to move to somewhere safer, although
it was unclear how many obeyed or, in some cases, how they could. Defense
Secretary Leon Panetta told 6,500 troops from all branches of the military to
get ready to pitch in on relief work, and President Barack Obama visited the
Federal Emergency Management Agency’s command center in Washington and offered
moral support.

“It’s going to be a long 72 hours,” he said, “and obviously
a lot of families are going to be affected.”

In New York, authorities began the herculean job of bringing the city to a
halt. The subway began shutting down at noon, the first time the system was
closed because of a natural disaster. It was expected to take as long as eight
hours for all the trains to complete their runs and be taken out of service.

As the clean-up
continues from the damages caused by Irene, I wonder if Irene will be retired
from the list of approved, official hurricane names.  Ever
wonder why you hear some hurricane names again? Or why some names disappear?
Here’s the scoop on hurricane names,
straight from NOAA:

For Atlantic hurricanes, there is actually one list for each of six
years. In other words, one list is repeated every seventh year. The only time
that there is a change is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use
of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for obvious reasons of
sensitivity. If that occurs, then at an annual meeting by the committee (called
primarily to discuss many other issues) the offending name is stricken from the
list and another name is selected to replace it.

There is an exception to the retirement rule, however. Before 1979,
when the first permanent six-year storm name list began, some storm names were
simply not used anymore. For example, in 1966, “Fern” was substituted
for “Frieda,” and no reason was cited.

Below is a list of retired names, in alphabetical order, for hurricanes
from the Atlantic Ocean:

BRUCE A.
BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as
I see it and the views as I want them.

August 28 is
… World Sauntering Day

I thought we had a
sauntering day not long ago.

The Brits seem to
have it all wrong but then, personally, I view the entire British people as an
unattractive bunch as a whole. Conventional wisdom may have men favoring blondes, but a
new UK study shows that actually men prefer brunettes.

As reported by the Daily Mail, social networking site Badoo polled
2,000 British men, asking them the features they found most attractive in
women. The surprise was that almost 60 percent of men found dark hair to be
more preferred than light, with 33.1 percent picking brown hair as the most
attractive and 28.6 saying black hair is the sexiest.

29.5 percent of gentlemen did, indeed, prefer blondes.

As for shape, do British dudes take their women skinny, curvy or somewhere
in between?

Based on our somewhat unscientific calculation (converting UK dress sizes
to American sizes), 38.8 percent of men actually favor a pretty average girl —
about a size 8 or 10. As for the skinny girls, the ones everyone is supposed to
love? Only ten percent of British males find a size 2 or size 4 woman most
attractive.

Are we entirely surprised? Yes and no. We know many men who have expressed
preference for brunettes (although we usually didn’t believe them), so that’s
not too much of a shock…What is more surprising is the size preferences.
Especially in the UK, where super-slender sisters Kate and Pippa are held aloft
as Britain’s finest, it is intriguing to learn that British men actually prefer
their real women with curves.

It’s a poll with findings worth promoting in the UK — a prior study showed
that British women are quite self-conscious about their bodies, more so than
American women. When asked how they felt about their overall body image, 15
percent of American women gave the positive response, “I was made to be
naked,” while only one out of ten UK women felt so sure. When it came to
feeling beach-ready, 30 percent of American women said they felt happy in a
bikini, while only 12 percent of British women felt the same way.

Maybe the British women would feel more confident if they knew their men loved
them just the way they are or if a non-Brit loved them.

Casey Anthony is not college material but then anyone can go to school
online. Others can do your work. According to Tampa Bay Online, Anthony, 25,
has not requested to go to school yet, but the Daily Mail reports that Anthony
was given a waiver to pursue online classes.

Anthony will be able to work out her schooling with her probation officer.
The New York Post reports that Anthony is protected by a round-the-clock
security force and will study from an undisclosed location. Who pays for the
round-the-clock security and why does she need it? She is yesterday’s news. If
she dies, she dies.

How do these people ever get to where they are at? I would bet this is not
the first dishonest thing in this guys history. Prosecutors say a Los Angeles
school police officer made up a story about being shot by a car burglary
suspect to look like a hero.

In opening statements Friday, prosecutors said 31-year-old Jeff Stenroos
accidentally shot himself while patrolling a high school, but lied about it,
saying he’d been shot while wearing a bulletproof vest. Stenroos is facing a
non-jury trial on charges of preparing a false police report, planting false
evidence and other counts stemming from his Jan. 19 report. Some 9,000 students
were held in their schools for hours while hundreds of police officers searched
for a gunman. Defense attorneys declined to offer an opening statement. Not a
good sign for the defendant if his lawyer could not come up with a way to
refute the State’s opening allegations.

Stenroos could be sentenced to more than five years in prison if convicted.
If convicted he should be given the harshest penalty available just to keep his
ignorant genes out of the gene pool for a while.

If they would have just let her strip, she would have shown them she was
not carrying anything harmful. A London-bound bmi flight was forced to return
to Moscow Friday after a female passenger started performing a provocative
one-woman show.

Fifteen minutes into the morning flight from Domodedovo Airport, cabin crew
noticed a “woman was acting strangely and disturbing other passengers,”
reports The Moscow Times. The drunk, 39-year-old woman from the Republic
of Tatarstan in Russia was “in a state of insobriety, inconveniencing the
passengers, taking off their glasses and dancing erotic dances.” a spokesman
for transport police was quoted as saying by Agence France Presse.

Shortly thereafter, the plane returned to Domodedovo and the woman was
taken to a local hospital for a medical examination. An interior ministry spokesman
speculated that the woman was fine; maybe just a bit too drunk. At least she
didn’t relieve herself on her fellow passengers like one JetBlue passenger did
earlier this month, or threaten to stab an airline staff member like one
British Airways passenger did. This stuff never happens on flights I am on. All
of my flights are just crowded, late, bumpy, delayed and expensive.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think
about.

August 27 is
… Petroleum Day

If you enjoy wildlife
videos and information about nature and the world around us, check out www.arkive.org It is a really neat site. If
you are a teacher or know a teacher, the site has educational tools on it based
on age groups.

In case you want to
add a little gas to the marriage fires on National Petroleum Day, move to the
South for a better chance of ending your marriage in divorce. A new report from the
U.S. Census released Thursday suggests that divorce rates for men and women in
the United States vary by region, and not necessarily in ways one might expect.

The findings, based on data collected by the American Community Survey in
2009 and published in a new report titled Marital Events of Americans: 2009,
indicate that men and women in the southern United States have the highest
divorce rates in the country, while those in the Northeast have the lowest
(2009 is the most recent year for which Census data on this topic is
available).

There are 10.2 divorces per 1000 men in the South (defined by the Census as
Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North and South
Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee,
Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas) and 11.1 per 1000 women–above the
national average of 9.2 for men and 9.7 for women in 2009. In the Northeast
(defined as Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island,
Vermont, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania) the rate is 7.2 per 1000 for
men and 7.5 per 1,000 for women in 2009. Two notable exceptions are Alaska and
Maine–two states where divorce rates for men and women rank in the top 10.

“Divorce rates tend to be higher in the South because marriage rates
are also higher in the South,” Diana Elliott, a family demographer at the
Census Bureau, said in a statement. “In contrast, in the Northeast, first
marriages tend to be delayed and the marriage rates are lower, meaning there
are also fewer divorces.”

According to the report, rate differences between men and women can be
attributed to several factors: Women tend to live longer than men and marry
older men. Conversely, men remarry more than women do, so their marriage rates
tend to be higher.

I am not sure who decides the states in the various regions but I do not
think of Delaware as a southern state. Apparently in Washington DC they do.

The highest rates for divorce among men were the following states:

1. Arkansas

2. Maine

3. Oklahoma

4. Alabama

5. Kentucky

For women the highest divorce rate states are:

1. Alaska

2. Oklahoma

3. Alabama

4. Kentucky

5. Arkansas

this divorce case, if I got paid. This one will be interesting and stressful
but no matter what, at the end of the Court day, I would get to go home. The Indiana couple
accused of severely abusing and murdering 13-year-old Christian Choate is
filing for divorce, and will head to court for a hearing Dec. 20.

The Northwest Indiana Times reports Riley Choate, 39, filed for a divorce from his
wife, Kimberly Kubina, 45, on Aug. 5, without an attorney. The couple is
currently being held without bond in the Lake County Jail and have a bail
hearing scheduled for Sept. 8. They have been charged with murder, battery,
neglect of a dependent, confinement, obstruction of justice, moving a body from
a death scene and failure to notify authorities of a dead body. They have both
pleaded not guilty to all charges. Young Christian Choate’s body was found
buried under a thin layer of concrete on May near the couple’s former home in a
mobile home park in Gary, Indiana. The boy is believed to have died in April of
2009, after being kept locked in a three-foot-high dog cage for most of the last
year of his life, according to his sister Christina. According to Christina, he
was only let out of the cage to eat and use the bathroom. His stepmother,
Kubina, took him out of school and said he was being homeschooled. His sister
was reportedly moved to Kentucky by her father, Riley, and sworn to secrecy
about what she witnessed.

The Indiana Department of Child Services reportedly visited with the Choate
family more than a dozen times beginning in 1999, following up on multiple
allegations of abuse and neglect in the home — but they never acted on or knew
of the severity of the alleged abuse. According to a DSC report, Kubina
“homeschooled” Christian by giving him paper and telling him to write
— sometimes giving him assignments including, “Why do you still want to
see your mom? Why can’t you let the past go? What does it mean to be part of a
family?” Christian often described that he was hungry or thirsty — his
writings “detail a very sad, depressed child.”

Others — more than a dozen — besides his sister reportedly had at least
some knowledge of Christian’s abuse but did not report it to authorities out of
either apathy, uncertainty or fear of retribution. His pediatrician, Dr.
Leticia Chy-Koa, was allegedly told by Christian that he was being locked in
his home at night and she even wrote in her notes that he was soiling himself.
She never contacted DCS.

The original autopsy of Christian’s body determined his cause of death to
be blunt force trauma which caused internal bleeding and a skull fracture.
Judge Diane Boswell denied the accused couple’s defense attorney’s request for
a second autopsy in July, shortly after she issued a gag order preventing DCS
from publicly addressing the case.

The Rick Perry tour is gaining momentum. Three new national polls released
on Wednesday show Texas Gov. Rick Perry rocketing ahead of Mitt Romney and the
rest of the announced candidates as the first choice of Republicans to be their
2012 presidential nominee.  A new survey
conducted late last week by Gallup finds Perry to be the choice of 29 percent
of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents nationwide, followed by Mitt
Romney with 17 percent, Ron Paul at 13 percent and Michelle Bachman scoring 10
percent. All other announced candidates received 4 percent or less, and 17
percent of Republicans nationwide expressed no preference.

The second survey, conducted using an automated methodology by the
Democratic firm Public Policy Polling (PPP), found a similar result. Testing
just the announced candidates, PPP finds Perry leading with 33 percent,
followed by Romney at 20 percent and Bachmann with 16 percent. All other
candidates received 8 percent or less and just 5 percent were undecided. Finally,
a new online survey of likely Republican primary voters conducted over the last
week by the Economist and YouGov shows Perry leading with 23 percent,
followed by Romney (15 percent), Paul (11 percent), Bachmann (9 percent), Cain
(8 percent) and all others with less than 6 percent with 11 percent undecided.

The new results represent a rapid transformation in the current Republican
vote preference. Neither Gallup nor PPP tested Perry as a likely Republican
candidate in June, and both added his name to surveys conducted July. A month
ago, Gallup showed Romney leading Perry — 23 percent to 18 percent — and the
rest of the GOP field. At the same time, PPP showed Bachman and Romney in a
virtual tie, receiving 21 and 20 percent respectively, with Perry trailing at
12 percent. But Perry’s official entry into the race on August 11 helped boost
his name recognition and reshape the current standings.

The new poll clearly moves Perry ahead on our trend estimate chart, which
combines results from all public polls.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think
about.

The news as

August 25 is
… Kiss-And-Make-Up Day

There will be no
kissing and making up at S & Phouse. In what will be the first of many
changes before total implosion occurs, the head of S & Phouse is cutting
ties with the company. In a release full of lies, the company insults
everyone’s intelligence by claiming the departure and the downgrade are not
related. The
president of Standard & Poor’s is stepping down, a decision coming only
weeks after the rating agency’s unprecedented move to strip the United States
of its AAA credit rating, according to reports published Monday.

The Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal reported that Deven Sharma
will stay on as an adviser to S&P’s parent company, McGraw-Hill Cos., until
the end of the year. They said S&P plans to make an official announcement
Tuesday before the U.S. financial markets open. The newspapers cite people familiar
with the matter who say Sharma’s move was in the works well before S&P
downgraded its rating on the U.S. to AA-plus on Aug. 5.

The Financial Times also said Sharma’s decision to leave S&P was not
due to recent reports that the Justice Department was investigating whether the
agency improperly rated dozens of mortgage securities in the years leading up
to the financial crisis in 2008. It said the move is the result of S&P
splitting its data, pricing and analytics business from its ratings business. Messages
were left with S&P spokesmen seeking comment.

S&P’s downgrade sent shock waves through global financial markets and
was sharply criticized by the Obama administration, which said the agency’s
analysis was fundamentally flawed. Other major rating agencies have not
followed S&P’s lead. Sharma joined S&P in 2006 and was named president
the following year. Before that, he was executive vice president, Global
Strategy, at McGraw-Hill for five years.

Someone should investigate this release of information to see if BP wrote
it. Wait, the Obama administration will investigate this right before the
election.

Jon Huntsman needs to look around and find his testicles. Even for a moron,
his campaigning to be number two is awfully early; plus, he hooked up with the
wrong horse in the race. Is this as good as it gets in the race for the most
powerful job in the world against a failing, fast-falling opponent?

Republican presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman says he’d be open to running
as vice president if rival and tea party favorite Michele Bachmann wins the
nomination. The former ambassador to China and ex-Utah governor says that every
time he’s been asked to serve his country he’s answered “yes.”
Huntsman tells CNN interviewer Piers Morgan that if asked by the Minnesota
congresswoman to run as her vice president he’d “be the first person to
sign up, absolutely.”

Huntsman tried quickly to backtrack, saying the answer was based on a
hypothetical question and that he has no doubt he’ll win the GOP nomination.
The interview was aired Monday night. On Sunday, Huntsman ridiculed Bachmann
for claiming she could bring gasoline prices below $2 if elected president.

This guy does his
best work backing up. Hopefully he will back right out of the picture.

Speaking of meaningless candidates or non-candidates, Sarah Palin, I hope
this tells you to forget about running. Your childish behavior in the maybe I
will, maybe I won’t crap is getting old with everyone. Your looks have taken
you as far as they will.

The Republican establishment inside the Washington Beltway may be pining
for new candidates to enter the race for president, but two-thirds of
influential local Republicans surveyed by The Huffington Post and Patch in the
early primary and caucus states are satisfied with their choices. And while
Sarah Palin is gearing up for a major speech in Iowa, just 8 percent want her
to run.

Sixty-three percent of the 169 influential Republicans surveyed in Iowa,
New Hampshire and South Carolina in our second HuffPost-Patch Power Outsiders
poll say they are satisfied with the candidates now running for president,
while just 36 percent say they want to see more candidates get into the race.

When asked which individuals, if any, they would like to see join the race,
our Power Outsiders were most likely to mention New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie
(31 percent of respondents), followed by Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan (17 percent).
In the midst of our survey, Ryan announced Monday that he will not run for
president next year.

While many would like to see either Christie or Ryan run, far fewer named
former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (8 percent) or former New York Mayor Rudy
Giuliani (4 percent), even though our question prompted for all four names.
Nearly as many volunteered Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels (4 percent) or former
Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (4 percent), both of whom declared earlier this
year that they would not enter the race. Roughly 12 percent said they were
satisfied with the current crop of candidates and still offered the name of
someone they would like to see enter the race. While only 36 percent said they
were not satisfied with the announced candidates and would “like to see
more candidates,” 48 percent named at least one non-candidate they would
like to see run. Their views are best summarized by the New Hampshire
Republican who said, “[I’m] satisfied, but the more options the
better.”

The results come from the second in a series of weekly surveys designed to
tap the deep reporting resources of the AOL Huffington Post Media Group in the
three early GOP voting states. These nonscientific samplings of Republican
party leaders, elected officials and political activists in the early primary
and caucus states are an attempt to cover the “invisible primary”
among party insiders that typically has great influence in the presidential
nomination contests. While the surveys are not representative of a larger
population, they constitute an extensive and systematic effort to monitor the
opinions of Republican activists and party leaders in the early voting states.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think
about.

Insurance costs and DSK

BRUCE A.
BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as
I see it and the views as I want them.

August 24 is
… Knife Day

A sharp knife cuts
the quickest and hurts the least. The accuser of DSK may be about to find this
out. He is strongly considering filing a counterclaim for defamation, abuse of
process and other causes of action against the maid who accused him of rape.
The criminal charges against DSK were dismissed on Tuesday because of the lies
of the accuser.

Her lawyer was quick to file a lawsuit against the wealthy DSK knowing he would get a large per centage of the result. You do not get a per centage in defending a lawsuit and I doubt the maid has the money to pay for a defense. I hope he moves forward with the counterclaim. It is about time someone fights back against the golddiggers in the world.

Charges dropped
against DSK. What prominent citizen of the world will be ruined next based on
the money-grabbing accusations of a lying, illegal alien? It is hunting season
on the rich and powerful.

Mitt Romney would just
as soon this story not get legs although what it reports has been known for
years. The 7 Best and Worst States for Individual Health-Insurance Premiums are
as follows. For those who don’t have the luxury of employer-paid health
coverage, finding out what individual coverage costs can be a challenge.

A new study that the Kaiser Family Foundation released in early August could
help to make it easier. The foundation analyzed data compiled by Mark Farrah
Associates to determine the average
premiums for individual health insurance across the U.S.
last year.

While the national
average monthly premium per person was $215, the prices were all over the
place, from a high of $437 in Massachusetts to a low of $136 in Alabama.

Why so much difference? According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, there’s
plenty of reasons for the range: cost of living; state demographics, such as
age distribution; varying health-care costs; the plans’ effectiveness at
controlling costs; the benefits offered by the different plans, the patient
cost-sharing required; and others.

In some places, a higher price is partly due to reforms. Massachusetts and
Vermont, for example, require people with pre-existing health conditions to be
able to enroll. In states where medical underwriting is permitted, rates may be
lower because the risk pools include a healthier-than-average population.

Then too, just
because premiums are lower in some states doesn’t mean those patients are
necessarily better off. People enrolled in those plans may have to pay higher
deductibles or co-payments that offset their savings in premiums.

What’s the takeaway? Shop wisely. “There are a lot of variations,”
says Gary Claxton, vice president of the Kaiser Family Foundation. “Think
about what level of coverage you want. Then, don’t rely on one source of
information. Check out online brokers as well as an insurance agent.” Know
too that even if you live in a state where premiums are high, it doesn’t mean
you will have to pay top dollar. “Look for plans where you can pay a
higher deductible,” Claxton says. “You’ll get the protection you need
at a lower premium, though if you only go to the doctor a couple of times a
year, you might have to pay for that out-of-pocket.”  In 2014, the Affordable Care Act kicks in.
That will mean big changes in how you can buy health insurance on your own.
Start studying up now so you’ll be ready to make smart moves in the future.

The best and
worst States for cost of coverage are;

Best                                                   Worst

Alabama  $136.00/month                           Massachusetts
$ 437.00/month

California
$157.00/month                 Vermont
$401.00/month

Arkansas
$163.00/month                           New
Jersey $304.00/month

Idaho
$167.00/month                       New
York $357.00/month

Delaware
$169.00/month                           Rhode
Island $344.00/month

Utah
$173.00/month                         West
Virginia $333.00/month

Florida
$178.00.month                     Connecticut
$306.00/month

I am not sure it
is worth moving to Alabama for cheaper health insurance but wait until
Obamacare really kicks in. We may all be moving somewhere like to the poor
house.

BP is being
investigated by the United States Justice Department for lying and
intentionally releasing false and misleading information about the Gulf oil
spill in 2010. This should not be a surprise. I do not know a person that
believed the information being released by BP at the time.

The Obama
Administration failed to get a grip on this problem, choosing to lead from
behind again. Now they are seeking to make headlines by making BP look like the
bad guy over a year later. BP is the bad guy. They could not have looked worse
than at the time this was happening. This administration is a joke and
embarrassment to the citizens of the United States. If they did not see the
lies being told by BP at the time, they are also ignorant and incompetent.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think
about.

Is this day about a

Libya! What do we do
now? Should we capture Ghaddaffi, lock him up for a few months then bring him
into an alleged Courtroom, strapped to a gurney and caged like a zoo animal for
a public trial. That appears to be working so well in Egypt.

Marie Antoinette
never said, “Let them eat cake.”, she was not a blonde and was not promiscuous.
She never milked her own cows, was not really French and did not spend France
into bankruptcy by her love of fashion. She was not the power behind King Louis
XVI. He was his own man and did not seek or care much for Marie’s advice other
than in a few minor job appointments. And now you know.

HURRICANR IRENE, 2011, film at eleven.

A hurricane has not
hit the mainland United States in three years. The weather junkies are trying
to become relevant again by making a big deal out of Irene. Hurricane Irene cut power
to more than a million people in Puerto Rico, downing trees and flooding
streets, before heading out over warm ocean water Monday on a path that could
take it to the U.S. mainland by the end of the week. There were no reports of
deaths of major injuries in Puerto Rico, but Gov. Luis Fortuno declared a state
of emergency and urged people to stay indoors to avoid downed power lines,
flooded streets and other hazards. “This isn’t the time to go out to find
out what happened … This is the time stay in your homes,” Fortuno said
at a news conference.

The first hurricane of the Atlantic storm season posed an immediate threat
to the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, though the center of the
hurricane was expected to miss neighboring Haiti, which shares the island of
Hispaniola. Nearly 600,000 Haitians are still homeless due to the January 2010
earthquake and that country could still see heavy rain and tropical-storm-force
winds, said Dennis Feltgen, a spokesman for the U.S. National Hurricane Center
in Miami.

“We don’t expect to this to get ripped up over the mountains of
Hispaniola,” Feltgen said. “We expect it to remain a hurricane.”
The storm was expected to head toward the Bahamas and authorities warned people
in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina to follow it closely since its path was
uncertain. The forecast track would carry it to just off the Florida coast by
Friday morning. Authorities in Palm Beach County directed staffers to stop
routine operations Monday and switch to storm preparations, including checks on
generators and communications equipment.

“Hurricane preparations are pretty much the order of the day,”
said Mike Geier, radiological emergency preparedness planner. “We go
through a pretty extensive checklist. It’s probably three pages long.”

Hurricane Irene centered about 90 miles (140 kilometers) west-northwest of
San Juan Monday morning and it was moving toward the west-northwest at 14 mph
(22 kph). It had maximum sustained winds of about 80 mph (130 kph), the
Hurricane Center reported.

The price of gasoline spiked when the Libyan crisis, manufactured by Europe
and the United States, first started. Prices have never fallen to the levels
they were at before the headlines started. Brent crude prices fell to near $107
a barrel on Monday after Libyan rebels captured most of the country’s capital,
boosting hopes the OPEC nation’s oil exports could resume soon. The price of
gasoline never falls as quick as it raises and rarely goes back to pre-crisis
levels. There is no legitimate explanation for that fact just some
bean-counters excuse.

Rebels overran a large part of Tripoli after a quick advance as defense of
Moammar Gadhafi’s regime collapsed. Gadhafi’s whereabouts were unknown while
two of his sons were captured by rebels. Prospects of an end to the Libyan
civil war lifted hopes that the country would be able to gradually bring daily
output back to pre-crisis levels of 1.6 million barrels of oil. However,
estimates on how long that will take varied from several weeks to a full year. Italian
Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Monday that Eni technicians were already
working to restart oil and natural gas production from the country. Eni is the
largest foreign producer in Libya, and most of the plants were built by its
subsidiary Saipem. Frattini told RAI state television that Eni workers have
been called to Bengazi to reactivate plants and that there were technical
consultations already last week.

Eni declined to elaborate on the comments, but noted that restarting
production could take some time – a couple months for natural gas and even a
year for oil. By contrast, Carsten Fritsch, an analyst with Commerzbank, noted
that rebels expect output to resume within three weeks of Gadhafi being
toppled. The speed with which production can be restarted depends on the state
of infrastructure and how quickly oil companies move workers back to Libya.
Pressure also needs to be built up in the fields and pipelines, meaning output
would resume incrementally. News of the rebels’ capture of Tripoli weighed on
Brent crude prices, with the benchmark contract down $1.37 per barrel to
$107.25 on the ICE Futures exchange in London by afternoon European time.

The benchmark U.S. oil contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange,
however, was up slightly – 50 cents to $82.76 a barrel. Brent has been at
unusual premium to the U.S. crude futures contract for months, in large part
due to the fact that Europe relies more than the U.S. on oil from Africa,
including Libyan imports. “If the Gadhafi regime falls, Libyan oil
production should gradually resume and European markets would directly benefit
from that,” said Victor Shum, an analyst with energy consultant Purvin
& Gertz in Singapore. “Having more supply while the global economy is
under threat should put downward pressure on oil prices.”

Gas and oil production has been mostly halted in Libya since February.
Although Libyan oil amounted to less than 2 percent of world demand, its loss
affected prices because of its high quality and suitability for European
refineries. Eni evacuated all of its personnel in Libya in March, but has said
no damage has been reported to the plants and pipelines and that it would be
technically able to resume output close to pre-crisis levels once the situation
had returned to normal. Eni produced 273,000 barrels of oil and natural gas in
2010 in Libya, about 15 percent of the company’s worldwide production. Shares
in the company were up 5 percent to euro13.10.

Repsol, another big producer in Libya, was not reachable for comment. Fears
of an economic slowdown in the U.S. and Europe have weighed heavily on energy
prices in recent weeks and are expected to remain key to market sentiment in
the longer term, although the Libyan developments dominated trading on Monday. “In
the coming days, the price could drop further towards $100 a barrel,” said
Fritsch, referring to Brent crude. In other Nymex trading for October
contracts, heating oil fell 1 cent to $2.89 per gallon and gasoline futures
dropped 4 cents to $2.81 per gallon. Natural gas for September delivery sank 4
cents to $3.90 per 1,000 cubic feet.

I am sure BP will
make plenty of money but, of course, they will lie about it. More tomorrow.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think
about.

August 22 is
… Be An Angel Day

The world, helped by
a strong nudge from the United States, has another black hole to watch
deteriorate. Libya is now leaderless. Like Egypt and Ethiopia before it,
nothing will change for the better. Syria and Yemen are close behind and will
fall into a leaderless bog shortly. Iran is going to be the leading power in
the Middle East and the United States will have caused it. Be careful what you
pray for, you might just get it. We need to learn not everyone wants to be like
the United States, except for the living of the backs of the wealthy part.

Who the hell is
steering this boat? First S & P downgrades the United States government
credit rating for no intelligent reason. S & P made a multi-billion dollar
mistake in its calculations but when told of the mistake, which they
acknowledge making, downgraded the credit rating anyway. They did not even
recalculate the formula they used in the first instance. Then it is leaked that
the government is investigating S & P over its involvement in the collapse
of worldwide economic markets. Now S & P threatens downgrade city and state
credit ratings.

Standard and Poor’s decision to downgrade the United States’ sovereign
credit rating has already sent shock waves through the stock market and
worsened fears of a double-dip recession. But for local and state governments,
the worst may be yet to come.

State and local governments are likely to face credit downgrades following
a finalization of the U.S. budget, Standard and Poor’s said in a report
Thursday.

The threat to governments at the state and local level is only the latest
shot fired in an ongoing battle between the public sector and S&P and the
other major rating agencies. Earlier this month, Standard & Poor’s became
the first agency in history to lower the nation’s sovereign debt rating to AA+,
one notch below a perfect triple-A. Then, following two weeks of unpredictable
market volatility, it was reported that the Justice Department was going ahead
with a probe into the agency’s activities in the years preceding the financial
crisis, particularly its habit of endorsing mortgage securities that later
turned out to be toxic. S&P and the rating agencies Moody’s and Fitch are
believed to have played an instrumental role in setting up the conditions for
the financial panic of 2008.

Despite a growing number of people calling the credibility of these
agencies into question, S&P warned this week that it’s considering further
revisions to governments below the national level. While the the U.S. Budget
Control Act of 2011 already includes at least $2.1 trillion in deficit
reductions over the next decade, further cuts to be determined by a bipartisan
“super committee” by late November will largely inform S&P’s
decisions over which state and local governments do or don’t get downgraded.

Credit ratings vary by state, and “differing levels of reliance on
federal funding, and varying management capabilities” will play a significant
role in determining which ratings change, S&P says.

“In our opinion, the longer-term deficit reduction framework adopted
as part of the Budget Control Act of 2011 (BCA) could undermine the already
fragile economic recovery and complicate aspects of state and local government
fiscal management,” Gabriel Petek, an S&P analyst, said in a
statement.

Already this year, S&P has revised the credit ratings for several state
governments. Six states have received upgrades, including South Dakota and
Wyoming, while New Jersey and Nevada have both had their ratings lowered. Meanwhile,
many counties and municipalities have also fared poorly, experiencing
“super-downgrades,” a fall of three or more notches on the rating
scale. Manassas Park, Va., for example, was downgraded a full five notches on
Standard and Poor’s scale, from AA- to BBB, due to “significant and rapid
deteriorations of the city’s financial position,” the WSJ reports. Despite
the grim outlook, S&P says that since budget cuts would not take effect
until 2013, state and local governments have time “to implement budget
adjustments that, in our view, could prove important in the maintenance of
their credit quality.” Likewise, the agency said that it was possible that
the highest-rated local and state governments could maintain their AAA rating.

S & P better hire an army of lawyers. Every state, city, town, county
and country they downgrade will be suing them. S & P will not exist in 18
months and no one will care or notice.

Karl Rove thinks Sarah Palin will get in the Republican race for the
Presidential nomination within ten days. She and Michelle Bachmann will cancel
each other out, leaving an opening for Paul Ryan or Chris Christie; stay tuned.
Christie likely dampened his chances when he acknowledged over the week-end
that climate change is real and a problem. That is not playing to the
Republican, business base.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think
about.
