is … Felt Hat Day

I do own a felt hat
but I have a couple made out of beaver skin. I do not wear any of them that
often except when I am camping but my youngest son wears fedoras quite often.

President Obama and
the Democrats got a small look at the future on Tuesday when Republicans won
two special elections for seats in the House of Representatives. One seat, from
Nevada, was projected to go /republican; the seat had never been won by a
Democrat. The other seat, in New York, to replace Anthony Weiner, the disgraced
sexting twitter star, was won by a Republican in an unexpected landslide. The
seat had been held by a Democrat for nearly a century but no more.

There was more bad
news for President Obama on Tuesday. Bank of America took billions and billions
of dollars of taxpayer’s money to remain in business. They apparently needed
new management more than money. On the day after President Obama presented his
job program to Congress, Bank of America gave the finger to the President, the
Congress and the United States citizens when it announced a massive layoff.

As companies closing shop or cutting costs stoke recession fears, the
return of mass layoffs may be the U.S. economy’s greatest concern.

On the same day that President Barack Obama submitted the American Jobs Act
to Congress, his plan to stimulate an ailing labor market, Bank of America
announced it will lay off 30,000 employees due to restructuring. That’s the
largest layoff announcement in the country this year, according to outplacement
consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

The bank’s decision may not be the largest single layoff announcement in
recent years — that distinction belongs to Citigroup’s November 2008 slashing
of 50,000 jobs — but in an economy that Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul
Krugman says has a 50 percent chance of falling back into recession, it’s cause
for concern. And Bank of America’s announcement is only the latest layoffs
news. Companies like pharmaceutical giant, Merck and Co., Borders and Cisco
Systems Inc. already made large layoff announcements this year. U.S. Postal
Service officials said earlier this month that they would slash their workforce
by 20 percent.

Even less encouraging, small businesses laid off workers for the third
straight month in August, after planned job cuts surged to 66,414 in July, a
16-month high. Still, signs for optimism do exist on the layoffs front, as
planned jobs cuts fell by a nearly a quarter in August. If only the country
could create some jobs too. Bank of America’s announcement that it plans to
shed 30,000 jobs doesn’t address the bank’s most pressing concerns, experts
said Monday.

The job cuts come as part of an initiative known as Project New BAC, the
first phase of which aims to save $5 billion in annual costs by 2014, the bank
announced Monday. But shareholders have been preoccupied in recent months with
something other than overhead costs — namely, the lawsuits from investors and
government regulators that potentially threaten the bank with billions in
losses. The company’s stock price has fallen about 50 percent this year as
speculation has swirled that it doesn’t have enough capital to defend against
losses, despite the bank’s persistent statements to the contrary.

But experts say Project New BAC, which also included a shake-up of top
management, doesn’t address these legal concerns — and say it may be for
naught.

President Obama has a
tendency to talk about Warren Buffet in many of his speeches. A few months ago,
Warren Buffet came out and invested 5 billion dollars in Bank of America. He
used this grand gesture as publicity to show his patriotism. If you had
followed his lead and bought B of A stock, you would have enjoyed a quick
increase in stock value but that only lasted a few days. The stock is now worth
less than the day Mr. Buffet bought it.

Being a major player
in the ownership of Bank of America, it seems obvious he would have been
involved in this decision. His ownership interest also puts him in a great
position to be the white knight that ‘saves’ the company, at a small per
centage of the value using his ownership as his down stroke.

I wonder if President
Obama is going to lavish Mr. Buffet with praise for his getting involved with
Bank of America now?

More trouble for
President Obama with his health care law. In what seems to be a continuing
theme in legal challenges to the Obama Health Care law, It has once again been
held unconstitutional. The United States Supreme Court should cut through the
red tape and take the appeal immediately.

The requirement in the national health-care overhaul law that individuals
buy health insurance is unconstitutional, a federal judge in Pennsylvania ruled
Tuesday in a question that the U.S. Supreme Court is widely expected to settle.
The ruling by Judge Christopher C. Conner in Harrisburg was issued in one of
more than 30 lawsuits nationwide that have been filed over the 2010 law that is
President Barack Obama’s signature initiative. It was filed by a Pennsylvania
couple who do not have health insurance, but believe they would be subject to
the mandate.

Conner, who was appointed to the federal bench in 2002 by President George
W. Bush, said the mandate that individuals buy health insurance or pay a
penalty starting in 2014 is an unconstitutional extension of authority granted
to the federal government under the Constitution’s commerce clause. “The
nation undoubtedly faces a health care crisis,” Conner said. “Scores
of individuals are uninsured and the costs to all citizens are measurable and
significant. The federal government, however, is one of limited enumerated
powers, and Congress’s efforts to remedy the ailing health care and health
insurance markets must fit squarely within the boundaries of those
powers.”

The power to regulate interstate commerce, Conner wrote, does not include
the power to dictate a lifetime of buying health insurance. Left standing, such
a requirement would effectively sanction Congress’s exercise of police power,
he wrote.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think
about.

Check this out. Have

On Tuesday, the ‘do nothing but tax’ governor
of Illinois, Governor Milquetoast announced he was going to lay-off thousands
of state workers and close prisons, homes for the insane and homes for the
mentally disabled.

In December of 2010,
this public pest sold a tax increase to the state legislature that increased
State of Illinois income taxes by nearly 100 %. He pressured several unions to
accept reduced pay and benefits in order to avoid lay-offs. Over seven
legislators who retired from the State legislator but voted for the tax
increase being pushed by the pest have been given high paying jobs in the
governor’s administration.

Now he is playing the
card all unimaginative politicians use. Either we get more money or prisons
will close and group homes will close. He is trying to scare the citizens with
the fact he and his co-horts cannot do their job effectively. He is turning on
the unions that got him elected. He is a liar, a cheat and incapable of doing
the job of governor. Impeachment is in order.

The Illinois state
toll way authority just voted a raise in toll rates that nearly doubled the
cost to drive on the toll ways in the state and more than doubled the cost for
truckers. I can see this coming from Utah. Our governor Milquetoast is going to
try to latch onto the increased toll way revenue.

Who did not see this
coming from the White House? President Obama has complained about the
Republicans playing politics with the wars we are fighting. Now, in an obvious
political move, Obama has decided to drastically reduce the troops in Iraq
against the advice of his military experts. I agree with the removal of troops
and would remove all of them but Obama better quit complaining about others
doing what he is doing. From Tuesday’s news, the
Obama administration has decided to drop the number of U.S. troops in Iraq
at the end of the year down to 3,000, marking a major downgrade in force
strength, multiple sources familiar with the inner workings and decisions on
U.S. troop movements in Iraq told Fox News.

Senior commanders are said
to be livid at the decision, which has already been signed off by Defense
Secretary Leon Panetta.
Panetta, touring sites Tuesday in advance of the Sept. 11 10th commemoration,
insisted “no decision has been made” on the number of troops to stay
in Iraq.  “That obviously will be
the subject of negotiations with the Iraqis and as a result of those
negotiations. As I said no decision has been made of what the number will
be,” he said.

Currently, about 45,000
U.S. troops are stationed in Iraq. The generals on the ground had requested
that the number of troops remaining in Iraq at the end of the year reach about
27,000. There was major pushback about “the cost and the political
optics” of that decision. Then that number was reduced to 10,000.  Commanders said they could possibly make that
work “in extremis,” in other words, meaning they would be pushing it
to make that number work security-wise and manpower-wise.

Now, sources confirm that
the administration has pushed the Pentagon
to cut the number even lower, and commanders are concerned for the safety of
the U.S. troops who would remain there.  “We
can’t secure everybody with only 3,000 on the ground nor can we do what we need
to with the Iraqis,” one source said.  A senior military official said by reducing
the number of troops to 3,000, the White House has effectively reduced the
mission to training only.  “There is
almost no room for security operations in that number; it will be almost purely
a training mission,” this official said. The official added that a very
small number of troops within that 3,000 will be dedicated to counter-terrorism
efforts, but that’s not nearly what Gen. Lloyd Austin, the top U.S. commander
in Iraq, wanted.

This shift is seen by
various people as a cost-saving measure and a political measure. White House
spokesman Jay Carney said Tuesday that the U.S. has operated responsibly to
meet the year-end deadline to remove troops from Iraq, per a 2008 Status of
Forces Agreement.

He added that negotiations
with the Iraqis will determine the outcome, and while costs are a factor in
every decision, the administration makes decisions on what is best for the
United States. The only administration official fighting for at least 10,000
forces to stay in Iraq at the end of the year was Secretary of State Hillary Clinton,
sources said. But she has lost the battle.

Responding to the news,
Sen. Joe Lieberman,
D-Conn., who has traveled to Iraq many times, said that in all the
conversations he has had on force strength, he has “never heard a number
as low as 3,000 troops to secure the gains Iraqis have won over the
years.”  Lieberman said his first
question for the administration is whether the number is one Iraqis had
requested or if it was chosen according to other criteria.  Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said reducing the
troop presence to 3,000 “would put at risk all the United States has
fought for in Iraq.”

“The biggest winner of
a U.S. decision to move to 3,000 troops in Iraq would the Iranian regime. The
ayatollahs would rejoice,” he said. Any of the plans will require Iraqi
approval, and on that front, the Pentagon recently secured a commitment from
the Iraqis to start negotiations, but they have not agreed to any number.  “Discussions with the Iraqis on our
post-2011 strategic relationship are ongoing, and no decisions on troop levels
have been made,” said Panetta spokesman George Little. “We continue
to proceed with troop withdrawals as directed by the president.”

On Tuesday, the head of the
three-province Kurdish autonomous region in the north of Iraq, warned that if
American troops leave sectarian violence might resurface. Massoud Barzani urged
the central Iraqi government to sign an agreement with the U.S. to keep forces
in the country.

is … Neither Rain or Snow Day

Wesley Snipes, your
table is ready but it is still in the Federal Prison in Pennsylvania. If you
would have just filed and paid your taxes for those three years you would still
be a free, rich “B” movie actor. Now, your next part could be as the star in
the film version of “Dumbest Criminals”.

We have been
experiencing a great deal of flooding in this country in the last year or so.
We have also had areas enduring drought and wildfires. The flooding and
wildfires are currently causing problems to thousands of Americans. I am not a
civil engineer or a person trained in water management but I have some ideas.

Let’s start in
the upper Midwest, near the origin of the Mississippi River. This river floods
nearly every year. The government has the right of eminent domain. It can
condemn any property it wants and take ownership of it. The government has to
pay for it but they can own it years before they ever pay for it.

In addition to
the right to acquire property, the government already owns quite a bit of land.
The government should suspend all environmental impact guidelines for a massive
public works project that will employ thousands of people for years and many
for life. Pass legislation that requires this project be commenced within six
months and completed in seven years.

Build huge
pipelines crisscrossing the country, situated in between or along highway land
the government already owns or will acquire. These pipelines would be used to
drain off flood water in areas that always flood and carry the fresh water to
areas that are always battling wildfires and droughts. Every mile or wherever
it is determined they are needed, a cleanout area could be installed to avoid
the clogging that will occur as a result of the debris entering the pipelines
with the floodwater. These pipelines should be a minimum of fifteen feet tall
and round. For ease of repair, they should not be buried but I am sure a design
can be developed for the aesthetics.

Every so often,
at points determined to be needed, drains can be installed to irrigate drought
areas or pump water to wildfires. The water is a natural resource that does not
have to be developed, mined, invented or processed. It just is. The annual
flooding every spring and during hurricane season would be reduced
dramatically; the droughts we have constantly will be alleviated; the wildfires
we constantly experience would be easier to maintain and extinguish without the
use of helicopters and chemicals.

Once again, I do
not have a civil engineering background but I know what I see. Everything we
have tried in the past has failed. We do not prevent flooding, we wait until
the water recedes; we do not extinguish many wildfires, we wait until the weather
changes; we do not prevent droughts, we just hear about them and bailout
farmers and pay more for food.

The system of
levees and dams we have built have worked in the past until water finds a way
around them or the water overwhelms them. Think New Orleans. The pipeline
system would be expensive initially but should pay for itself within five
years. The cost of maintenance would not be cost prohibitive. The legislation
authorizing this project should include a provision that all materials used in
the building and maintenance of the pipeline must be made in America. All
workers must be legal citizens of the United States of America. The jobs
created by the manufacturing of the pipeline components should bring in enough
tax revenue to nearly pay for the project and that is not taking into account
the workers building the pipeline or the engineers or the people doing the
survey work or buying the land, etc.

Survival of the
fittest is a concept that is debated but widely accepted. If a blue toed moth
happens to become extinct because of this project, too bad. I do not think man
or the United States should go extinct saving a bald toad. According to a
United Nations scientific study conducted in 2010 and released in August 2010,
between 150 and 200 species become extinct every 24 hours in the world.
Apparently we have plenty to go around.

This is “Neither
rain or snow day”. My idea needs some tinkering but it will adequately control
either rain or snow. It is time to try something new and bold. Continuing to do
what has not worked over history is the definition of insanity. To keep
repeating the same things expecting a different result is nuts. My idea may not
work but it is a beginning. To merely say that an idea is bad and will not work
without coming up with a plan of your own is what politicians do; it is not
what serious, effective people do. You have one choice in life, fish or cut up
the bait. Those that fish are the movers and shakers; those that cut up the
bait are the rest.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think
about.

BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as

September 6
is … Fight Procrastination Day

From last week. When
President Obama loses the support of Keith Olbermann, it has to be a proper
decision that will sit well with the Republicans. This is another example of
many showing our President has no guts, no backbone and no clue. He gave in
before the fight even started. Later, he will apologize to the polluters.

Keith Olbermann excoriated President Obama on his Friday show for halting
the impending toughening of environmental regulations against smog. The
announcement from the White House that it would keep widely criticized 2006
regulations in place until at least 2013 did not sit well with Olbermann. In
the voiceover introduction to his show, he thundered, “what the hell is
going on in the White House?”

Olbermann said that Obama had given a huge gift to polluters and
corporations, and had delivered an equally large “whack across the
knees” to his base.

“It seems, in short, to reduce his campaign logic to ‘what are you
going to do, vote for Rick Perry?'” Olbermann said. He noted that Obama’s
EPA administrator had called the 2006 standards “not legally defensible,”
and scoffed at the president’s stated excuse for not updating them — that,
since the standards were going to be reviewed in 2013, he did not want to ask
states and businesses to undergo two rounds of tinkering with their
environmental policies.

“So, if you’re having trouble breathing, or if you just occasionally
do breathe, kindly help the president out and hold your breath until the year
2013 or later,” Olbermann said. Later, speaking to a guest about the
issue, he was equally scornful. “Who on earth in the White House thinks
this is a positive for them and in which delusional parallel universe do they
live?” he asked.

BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

September 5
is … Be Late for Something Day

Now today must have been designated for Glenn.

HAPPY LABOR DAY, the
unofficial end of summer. I hope you have had an enjoyable summertime. Don’t be
late.

Thank God President
failed to follow through with this campaign promise and is late in closing
Gitmo.

NATO and Afghan forces have killed a former Guantanamo detainee who returned
to Afghanistan to become a key al-Qaida ally, international officials said
Saturday.

The militant’s death was a reminder of the risks of trying to end a
controversial detention system without letting loose people who will launch
attacks on Americans.

Sabar Lal Melma, who was released from Guantanamo in 2007, had been
organizing attacks in eastern Kunar province and funding insurgent operations,
NATO spokesman Capt. Justin Brockhoff said.

A NATO statement described Melma as a “key affiliate of the al-Qaida
network” who was in contact with senior al-Qaida members in both
Afghanistan and Pakistan. Another former detainee who joined the al-Qaida
franchise in Yemen was killed in a recent U.S. airstrike there.

About 520 Guantanamo detainees have been released
from custody or transferred to prisons elsewhere in the world. There are 171
inmates still held at the facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. President Barack
Obama signed an executive order in 2009 just after taking office asking for it
to be shut down within the year, but it has remained open as the administration
has worked to find ways to deal with the inmates.

After the fall of the Taliban, Melma, 49, was
given the rank of brigadier general in the Afghan National Army and placed in
charge of approximately 600 border security troops in Kunar, according to a
file made public by WikiLeaks.

But he was suspected of still helping carry out
rocket attacks against U.S. troops, and he was captured in August 2002 while
attending a meeting with U.S. military officials in Asadabad and transferred to
the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay in October that year. While imprisoned at
Guantanamo Bay, the U.S. determined he was a “probable facilitator for
al-Qaida members” and was also thought to have links to Pakistan’s intelligence
service. In 2005, he was described as a “medium risk” to the United
States. He was sent back to Afghanistan in September 2007.

NATO said in a statement that coalition forces
have captured or killed more than 40 al-Qaida insurgents in eastern Afghanistan
this year.

Why would we ever release our enemy to fight
against us? Why not put several thousand people to work building a high
security prison at a military facility, try these combatants, release the not
guilty ones by putting them on a small power boat in the Mediterranean Sea and
imprison the guilty ones for life. We could then keep track of who has contact
with them as a lead to other terrorists.

On a happier note, life sometimes imitates art. Free
at last. The wayward emperor penguin dubbed “Happy Feet” is back in
the ocean south of New Zealand. The penguin was released from the research
vessel Tangaroa on Sunday morning about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of
remote Campbell Island in water about 935 feet (285 meters) deep.

Wellington Zoo veterinarian Lisa Argilla said
Happy Feet needed some “gentle encouragement” to leave the
purpose-built crate that had been his home on the boat for six days. He slid
down a makeshift ramp backward and then took off.

The bird was discovered June 20 on a New Zealand
beach far from his Antarctic feeding grounds. He became sick from eating sand
and was transferred to the Wellington Zoo. His story has captured the
imagination of people around the world.

If you go to the website below, you can track
the journey of Happy Feet on his way home. He has a tracking device glued to
him. Good luck buddy.

August 30 is
… National Toasted Marshmallow Day

Toasted marshmallows have nothing to do with
this story from last week out of London. Neither do sunny-side up fried eggs. A 26-year-old woman is
recovering from a ruptured breast implant after taking a shot to the chest
during a Saturday round of paintballing.

The woman, who has not been named, thought she was experiencing heavy
bruising, but when she paid a visit to her doctor on Monday, it was discovered
that her silicone breast had, in fact, exploded.

UK Paintball, which operated the facility in the South London town of
Croydon where the incident took place, is now taking extra safety precautions,
according to The Sun. The lawsuit has not been filed yet and copycats
have yet to come forward but they will.

A statement posted to the UK Paintball website reads:

“Due to an incident at our Croydon Paintballing centre on Saturday 20
August 2011 we respectfully ask that any ladies with surgical breast implants
notify our team at the time of booking. You will be given special information
on the dangers of paintballing with enhanced boobs and asked to sign a
disclaimer. You will also be issued with extra padding to protect your implants
while paintballing.” Elton John could write a song about enhanced electric
boobs to make the story more enjoyable.

Paintballs travel approximately 190 miles-per-hour. “Part of the fun of
paintball is that it hurts a bit when you get shot but in all the years we’ve
been going we’ve never seen an incident like this,” a spokesperson for UK
Paintball said, according to the Croydon Guardian.  “It came as a real surprise to hear that a
woman had her implant burst at one of our centres and whilst she’s going to
make a full recovery, we want to ensure nothing like this happens ever again.

The incident is thought to be the first of its kind in the United Kingdom,
the BBC reported. The spokesperson also added, “It’s worth remembering that
having bigger breasts will make you an easier target for your enemies.” And
also for your friends and many drunk people.

Rick Perry thinks Social Security is a government Ponzi scheme. Not a new
idea but a thought not many national political candidates express. He also
insists that Social Security is a “monstrous lie” Once again, this is not a new
thought but rarely expressed publically by serious national candidates. If Rick
Perry wants to continue to be a player he has to learn what to say to whom and
when. Do not tell me what the problems are and who caused them. Tell me how you
will fix the problems.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think

Irene was no Andrew.

BRUCE A.
BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as
I see it and the views as I want them.

August 29 is
… More Herbs, Less Salt Day

From Sunday morning,
Irene was a big storm but not as big as predicted. It was the first hurricane to
make landfall in the continental United States since 2008, and came almost six
years to the day after Katrina ravaged New Orleans. Experts guessed that no
other hurricane in American history had threatened as many people.

At least 2.3 million were under orders to move to somewhere safer, although
it was unclear how many obeyed or, in some cases, how they could. Defense
Secretary Leon Panetta told 6,500 troops from all branches of the military to
get ready to pitch in on relief work, and President Barack Obama visited the
Federal Emergency Management Agency’s command center in Washington and offered
moral support.

“It’s going to be a long 72 hours,” he said, “and obviously
a lot of families are going to be affected.”

In New York, authorities began the herculean job of bringing the city to a
halt. The subway began shutting down at noon, the first time the system was
closed because of a natural disaster. It was expected to take as long as eight
hours for all the trains to complete their runs and be taken out of service.

As the clean-up
continues from the damages caused by Irene, I wonder if Irene will be retired
from the list of approved, official hurricane names.  Ever
wonder why you hear some hurricane names again? Or why some names disappear?
Here’s the scoop on hurricane names,
straight from NOAA:

For Atlantic hurricanes, there is actually one list for each of six
years. In other words, one list is repeated every seventh year. The only time
that there is a change is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use
of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for obvious reasons of
sensitivity. If that occurs, then at an annual meeting by the committee (called
primarily to discuss many other issues) the offending name is stricken from the
list and another name is selected to replace it.

There is an exception to the retirement rule, however. Before 1979,
when the first permanent six-year storm name list began, some storm names were
simply not used anymore. For example, in 1966, “Fern” was substituted
for “Frieda,” and no reason was cited.

Below is a list of retired names, in alphabetical order, for hurricanes
from the Atlantic Ocean:

Libya! What do we do
now? Should we capture Ghaddaffi, lock him up for a few months then bring him
into an alleged Courtroom, strapped to a gurney and caged like a zoo animal for

Marie Antoinette
never said, “Let them eat cake.”, she was not a blonde and was not promiscuous.
She never milked her own cows, was not really French and did not spend France

XVI. He was his own man and did not seek or care much for Marie’s advice other
than in a few minor job appointments. And now you know.

HURRICANR IRENE, 2011, film at eleven.

A hurricane has not
hit the mainland United States in three years. The weather junkies are trying
to become relevant again by making a big deal out of Irene. Hurricane Irene cut power
to more than a million people in Puerto Rico, downing trees and flooding
streets, before heading out over warm ocean water Monday on a path that could
take it to the U.S. mainland by the end of the week. There were no reports of
deaths of major injuries in Puerto Rico, but Gov. Luis Fortuno declared a state
of emergency and urged people to stay indoors to avoid downed power lines,
flooded streets and other hazards. “This isn’t the time to go out to find
out what happened … This is the time stay in your homes,” Fortuno said
at a news conference.

The first hurricane of the Atlantic storm season posed an immediate threat
to the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, though the center of the
hurricane was expected to miss neighboring Haiti, which shares the island of
Hispaniola. Nearly 600,000 Haitians are still homeless due to the January 2010
earthquake and that country could still see heavy rain and tropical-storm-force
winds, said Dennis Feltgen, a spokesman for the U.S. National Hurricane Center
in Miami.

“We don’t expect to this to get ripped up over the mountains of
Hispaniola,” Feltgen said. “We expect it to remain a hurricane.”
The storm was expected to head toward the Bahamas and authorities warned people
in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina to follow it closely since its path was
uncertain. The forecast track would carry it to just off the Florida coast by
Friday morning. Authorities in Palm Beach County directed staffers to stop
routine operations Monday and switch to storm preparations, including checks on
generators and communications equipment.

“Hurricane preparations are pretty much the order of the day,”
said Mike Geier, radiological emergency preparedness planner. “We go
through a pretty extensive checklist. It’s probably three pages long.”

Hurricane Irene centered about 90 miles (140 kilometers) west-northwest of
San Juan Monday morning and it was moving toward the west-northwest at 14 mph
(22 kph). It had maximum sustained winds of about 80 mph (130 kph), the
Hurricane Center reported.

The price of gasoline spiked when the Libyan crisis, manufactured by Europe
and the United States, first started. Prices have never fallen to the levels
they were at before the headlines started. Brent crude prices fell to near $107
a barrel on Monday after Libyan rebels captured most of the country’s capital,
boosting hopes the OPEC nation’s oil exports could resume soon. The price of
gasoline never falls as quick as it raises and rarely goes back to pre-crisis
levels. There is no legitimate explanation for that fact just some
bean-counters excuse.

Rebels overran a large part of Tripoli after a quick advance as defense of
Moammar Gadhafi’s regime collapsed. Gadhafi’s whereabouts were unknown while
two of his sons were captured by rebels. Prospects of an end to the Libyan
civil war lifted hopes that the country would be able to gradually bring daily
output back to pre-crisis levels of 1.6 million barrels of oil. However,
estimates on how long that will take varied from several weeks to a full year. Italian
Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Monday that Eni technicians were already
working to restart oil and natural gas production from the country. Eni is the
largest foreign producer in Libya, and most of the plants were built by its
subsidiary Saipem. Frattini told RAI state television that Eni workers have
been called to Bengazi to reactivate plants and that there were technical
consultations already last week.

Eni declined to elaborate on the comments, but noted that restarting
production could take some time – a couple months for natural gas and even a
year for oil. By contrast, Carsten Fritsch, an analyst with Commerzbank, noted
that rebels expect output to resume within three weeks of Gadhafi being
toppled. The speed with which production can be restarted depends on the state
of infrastructure and how quickly oil companies move workers back to Libya.
Pressure also needs to be built up in the fields and pipelines, meaning output
would resume incrementally. News of the rebels’ capture of Tripoli weighed on
Brent crude prices, with the benchmark contract down $1.37 per barrel to
$107.25 on the ICE Futures exchange in London by afternoon European time.

The benchmark U.S. oil contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange,
however, was up slightly – 50 cents to $82.76 a barrel. Brent has been at
unusual premium to the U.S. crude futures contract for months, in large part
due to the fact that Europe relies more than the U.S. on oil from Africa,
including Libyan imports. “If the Gadhafi regime falls, Libyan oil
production should gradually resume and European markets would directly benefit
from that,” said Victor Shum, an analyst with energy consultant Purvin
& Gertz in Singapore. “Having more supply while the global economy is
under threat should put downward pressure on oil prices.”

Gas and oil production has been mostly halted in Libya since February.
Although Libyan oil amounted to less than 2 percent of world demand, its loss
affected prices because of its high quality and suitability for European
refineries. Eni evacuated all of its personnel in Libya in March, but has said
no damage has been reported to the plants and pipelines and that it would be
technically able to resume output close to pre-crisis levels once the situation
had returned to normal. Eni produced 273,000 barrels of oil and natural gas in
2010 in Libya, about 15 percent of the company’s worldwide production. Shares
in the company were up 5 percent to euro13.10.

Repsol, another big producer in Libya, was not reachable for comment. Fears
of an economic slowdown in the U.S. and Europe have weighed heavily on energy
prices in recent weeks and are expected to remain key to market sentiment in
the longer term, although the Libyan developments dominated trading on Monday. “In
the coming days, the price could drop further towards $100 a barrel,” said
Fritsch, referring to Brent crude. In other Nymex trading for October
contracts, heating oil fell 1 cent to $2.89 per gallon and gasoline futures
dropped 4 cents to $2.81 per gallon. Natural gas for September delivery sank 4
cents to $3.90 per 1,000 cubic feet.

I am sure BP will
make plenty of money but, of course, they will lie about it. More tomorrow.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think
about.

August 19 is … Potato Day

This
spuds for you!

It is not
nice to screw with Mother Nature. Standard & Poor’s is about to learn this
first hand.

The
Justice Department is investigating whether the Standard & Poor’s credit
ratings agency improperly rated dozens of mortgage securities in the years leading
up to the financial crisis, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

The
investigation began before Standard & Poor’s cut the United States’ AAA
credit rating this month, but it’s likely to add to the political firestorm
created by the downgrade, the newspaper said. Some government officials have
since questioned the agency’s secretive process, its credibility and the
competence of its analysts, claiming to have found an error in its debt
calculations.

The
Times cites two people interviewed by the government and another briefed on
such interviews as its sources. According to people with knowledge of the
interviews, the Justice Department has been asking about instances in which the
company’s analysts wanted to award lower ratings on mortgage bonds but may have
been overruled by other S&P business managers.

If
the government finds enough evidence to support a case, it could undercut
S&P’s longstanding claim that its analysts act independently from business
concerns. The newspaper said it was unclear whether the Justice Department
investigation involves the other two major ratings agencies, Moody’s and Fitch,
or only S&P.

S&P
and other ratings agencies reaped record profits as they bestowed their highest
ratings on bundles of troubled mortgage loans, which made the mortgages appear
less risky and thus more valuable. They failed to anticipate the deterioration
that would come in the housing market and devastate the financial system.

Companies
and some countries — but not the United States — pay the credit ratings
agencies to receive a rating, the financial market’s version of a seal of
approval. Before the financial crisis, banks shopped around to make sure rating
agencies would award favorable ratings before agreeing to work with them. These
banks paid as much as $100,000 for ratings on mortgage bond deals, according to
the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, the Times said.

Critics
say this business model is riddled with conflicts of interest since ratings
agencies might make their grades more positive to please their customers.

The
Times said the Securities and Exchange Commission also has been investigating
possible wrongdoing at S&P, citing a person interviewed on that matter.

Ed
Sweeney, a spokesman for S&P, said in an email to the Times: “S&P
has received several requests from different government agencies over the last
few years. We continue to cooperate with these requests. We do not prevent such
agencies from speaking with current or former employees.”

Representatives
of the Justice Department and the SEC declined to comment on whether they are
investigating the ratings agencies, the newspaper said.

I
wonder if this guy is a Democrat or just doesn’t understand his job. I assume
he is about to be unemployed.

From
AP, a Secret Service
agent on assignment in Iowa to help with presidential security has been
arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. City
Police Chief Bill Nixon says 40-year-old Daniel L. Valencia was off duty when
he was arrested Saturday in Decorah. Decorah is the city that hosted the eagle
cam this past late winter, spring and summer. President Barack Obama visited
the northeast Iowa city on Monday as part of his three-day Midwestern bus trip.

Nixon
says the arresting officer suspected Valencia had been drinking but that no vehicles
were involved in an accident. He declined further comment Wednesday.

Secret
Service spokesman George Ogilvee confirmed that Valencia is an agent and that
the matter had been turned over to the agency’s Office of Professional
Responsibility. Ogilvee would not comment further. Online court records don’t
list an attorney for Valencia.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think

AUGUST 16, 2011

BRUCE A.
BRENNAN BLOG FROM THE WORLD AND MY MIND

The news as
I see it and the views as I want them.

August 16 is
… Bratwurst Festival

And speaking of a
great weenie, Ruth Madoff has cut ties with her husband of 52 years. She has to
remember him. He is the guy that made her wealthy beyond her wildest dreams.
She has given much of the money to the feds to repay bilked investors but only
lawyers are getting paid so far. Bernie’s kids have also cut him off but have
not given up their riches either. None of the Madoffs will ever be poor. Thanks
dad but go to hell.

Ruth Madoff, who stood by her disgraced husband Bernie despite his $65
billion Ponzi scheme and 150-year prison sentence, is cutting ties to him now
in an attempt to reconcile with her estranged family, according to a new report.

Madoff biographer Diana Henriques told London’s The Express that
Ruth hasn’t visited Bernie–her husband of 52 years–since their eldest son
Mark’s suicide in December 2010. After Mark’s death, his grieving widow
prohibited Ruth from attending his memorial service in Connecticut. Ruth
remains estranged from her other son, Andrew,

as well.

Ruth infuriated her family when she stood by Bernie after he was beaten in
prison in 2009. She had initially aligned with her sons, who gave her an
ultimatum when the Ponzi scheme was exposed in 2008: him or us.

“Ruth has not seen Bernie since Mark’s suicide, and I think the
remnants of the family will now pull together,” Henriques told The
Express
. “Ruth visiting him in prison was a major impediment to her
being reconciled with them.” In a CBS “Early Show” interview Monday
morning, Henriques–the first reporter to interview Madoff in prison and the
author of “Bernard Madoff, The Wizard of Lies”–revealed that Bernie
wants Ruth to move on.

“Bernie wants Ruth to do whatever she must to rebuild her life, even
at the expense of their obviously limited time together. He cares very much
about her, and I think wants her to have the comfort of her family in the years
to come,” she told Chris Wragge.

But is reconciling with her son and grandchildren possible? “We’re
going to see,” Henriques said. “I’m encouraged by the sources that I
hear that there are good signs of reconciliation.”

1948 Babe Ruth Baseball legend, dies in NY at 53.

1977 Elvis Presley dies of heart
ailment at Graceland at 42.

1991 Shamu the Whale dies at 16,
from respiratory failure.

The great ones always
die in threes. The death of Elvis sent many people to the end of Lonely Street,
right to the Heartbreak Hotel because they were All Shook Up, when they
couldn’t find a partner, they used a wooden chair. Many people have never
gotten over the fact Elvis was Returned to Sender.

Elvis Presley was
rushed from Graceland to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee on
this day in 1977. Doctors’
efforts to revive him were fruitless and he was pronounced dead (coronary
arrhythmia) at 3:30 p.m. He was 42 years old. Thousands of mourning fans kept a
vigil outside Graceland, the home of the King of Rock and Roll, for three days
before his burial. Thousands more lined the streets of Presley’s hometown on
the day of his funeral.

The city, the nation,
the music world and fans from around the world were in shock over his passing.
Even to this day, some say that Elvis didn’t die — he just wanted to get away
from it all. Fans from all over have reported sightings of Elvis — from a
hamburger joint in Kalamazoo, MI, to California.

Elvis had an
unprecedented 107 hits on the pop music charts and an unprecedented number of
fans. His first hit was Heartbreak Hotel in 1956 and his last, one of
two RCA hits released after his death, was Guitar Man in 1981. Presley
had 28 gold records, 12 number one songs and 38 top-ten hits.

Presley is buried at
Graceland, now a major tourist attraction.

We remember him well.
We miss him a bunch.

Just a couple of thoughts I had and you should too or at least think
about.
